13:1 A wise son accepts1 a father’s discipline,2
but a scoffer3 does not listen to rebuke.
13:2 From the fruit of his lips4 one eats good things,5
but the desire6 of the faithless is for violence.7
13:3 The one who guards his mouth guards his life,
whoever opens wide his lips8 will have ruin.9
13:4 The soul of the sluggard10 craves,11 but has nothing;
but the soul of the diligent shall be abundantly satisfied.12
13:5 The righteous hate anything false,13
but the wicked act vilely and shamefully.14
13:6 Righteousness15 guards the one who has integrity,16
but wickedness17 overthrows the sinner.
13:7 There is one who makes himself out as rich, and yet he has nothing;
another makes himself out to be poor, and yet he has much wealth.18
13:8 The ransom19 of a person’s20 life are his riches,
but the poor hear no threat.21
13:9 The light22 of the righteous shines brightly,23
but the lamp24 of the wicked goes out.25
13:10 With pride26 comes only27 contention,
but wisdom is with the well-advised.28
13:11 Wealth from nothing29 shall be diminished,30
but whoever gathers it little by little31 shall make it increase.
13:12 Hope deferred32 makes the heart sick,33
but a longing fulfilled34 is a tree of life.
13:13 The one who despises the word35 will pay for it,36
but whoever fears a command will37 be rewarded.38
13:14 The instruction of the wise is a fountain of life,39
to turn40 people41 from the snares of death.42
13:15 Good understanding43 gives grace,
but the way of the unfaithful is harsh.44
13:16 Every shrewd45 person acts with knowledge,
but a fool displays46 his folly.
13:17 A wicked messenger falls47 into trouble,48
but a faithful envoy49 brings healing.
13:18 The one who neglects50 discipline comes to poverty and shame,
but whoever regards reproof will be honored.51
13:19 A desire accomplished is sweet to the soul,
but turning from evil is an abomination to fools.52
13:20 The one who walks53 with the wise grows wise,
but a companion of fools suffers harm.54
13:21 Evil55 pursues sinners,
but the righteous shall be repaid with good.56
13:22 A good person leaves an inheritance57 for his children’s children,
but the wealth of a sinner is stored up for the righteous.58
13:23 There is abundant food in the field59 of the poor,
but there is what is swept away for lack of justice.60
13:24 The one who spares his rod61 hates62 his child,63
but whoever loves him is disciplines him early enough.64
13:25 The righteous eats to the satisfaction of his appetite,65
but the belly of the wicked shall lack food.66
