46:1 So Israel began his journey¹ with all that he had; and when he came² to Beersheba he offered sacrifices³ to the God of his father Isaac.

46:2 And God spoke to Israel in the vision⁴ of the night, and said, “Jacob, Jacob!” And he said, “Here I am.” 46:3 And he said, “I am God,⁵ the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down⁶ into Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there. 46:4 I will go down with you into Egypt, and I will surely bring you up again.⁷ And Joseph will close your eyes.”⁸

46:5 Then Jacob started out⁹ from Beersheba; and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the carts that Pharaoh had sent to carry him. 46:6 And they took their livestock, and their possessions that they had acquired in the land of Canaan, and Jacob and all his descendants with him went to Egypt. 46:7 He brought with him to Egypt his sons and grandsons,¹⁰ his daughters and granddaughters, and all his descendants.

46:8 These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt—Jacob and his sons.

Reuben, the firstborn of Jacob.
46:9 And the sons of Reuben:
Hanoch, and Pallu, and Hezron, and Carmi.
46:10 And the sons of Simeon:
Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jakin, and Zohar,
and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman.
46:11 And the sons of Levi:
Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
46:12 And the sons of Judah:
Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Perez, and Zerah
(And Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan).
And the sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.
46:13 And the sons of Issachar:
Tola, and Puah, and Jashub,¹¹ and Shimron.
46:14 And the sons of Zebulon:
Sered, and Elon, and Jahleel.
46:15 These were the sons of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob in Paddan Aram, along with Dinah his daughter; all¹² his sons and daughters were thirty three people.
46:16 And the sons of Gad:
Zephon,¹³ and Haggi, Shuni, and Ezbon, Eri, and Arodi, and Areli.
46:17 And the sons of Asher:
Imnah, and Ishvah, and Ishvi, and Beriah, and Serah their sister.
And the sons of Beriah: Heber and Malkiel.
46:18 These were the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter; and she bore these to Jacob, sixteen people.
46:19 The sons of Rachel the wife of Jacob:
Joseph and Benjamin.
46:20 And there was born to Joseph in the land of Egypt Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath bore for him, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On.
46:21 And the sons of Benjamin:¹⁴
Bela, and Beker, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, Ehi, and Rosh, Muppim, and Huppim and Ard.
46:22 These were the sons of Rachel who were born to Jacob, fourteen people in all.
46:23 And the son of Dan:
Hushim.
46:24 And the sons of Naphtali:
Jahziel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem.
46:25 These were the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to Rachel His daughter, and she bore these to Jacob, seven people in all.

46:26 All the people who went to Egypt with Jacob, those who came from his body, except for the wives of the sons of Jacob, were sixty-six people in all. 46:27 With the sons of Joseph who were born to him in Egypt, two people, all the people of the household of Jacob who went to Egypt were seventy.

46:28 And he sent Judah before him to Joseph, to show the way before him to Goshen; so they came to the land of Goshen. 46:29 And Joseph harnessed¹⁵ his chariot and went up to meet Israel his father in Goshen; and when he appeared¹⁶ to him he fell on his neck and wept on his neck a good while.

46:30 And Israel said to Joseph, “Now let me die, since I have seen your face that you are still alive.” 46:31 Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and speak to Pharaoh and will say to him, “My brothers and my father’s household who were in the land of Canaan have come to me. 46:32 And the men are shepherds,¹⁷ cattlemen,¹⁸ and they have brought their flocks and their herds and all that they have.¹⁹ 46:33 When Pharaoh summons you and says, `What is your work?’ 46:34 then you will say, `Your servants have taken care of cattle²⁰ from our youth until now, both we and our fathers,’ that you may live in the land of Goshen, for everyone who takes care of sheep is an abomination to the Egyptians.”
