Joseph’s Wise Administration

47:1 Then Joseph went and told Pharaoh, and said, “My father and my brothers and their flocks and their herds and all that they own have arrived1 from the land of Canaan, and they are now2 in the land of Goshen.” 47:2 And from among his brothers he took five men and presented them before Pharaoh.

47:3 And Pharaoh said to his brothers, “What is your work?” And they said to Pharaoh, “Your servants are shepherds of the flock, both we and our fathers.” 47:4 And they said to Pharaoh, “We have come to live temporarily3 in the land, because there is no pasture for the flocks that your servants own, because the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. So now, please let your servants live in the land of Goshen.”

47:5 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you. 47:6 The land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best of the land. Let them live in the land of Goshen. And if you know of any able men4 among them, then put them in charge5 of my livestock.”

47:7 Then Joseph brought Jacob his father in and stood him6 before Pharaoh. And Jacob blessed7 Pharaoh. 47:8 And Pharaoh said to Jacob, “How long have you lived?”8

47:9 And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “All9 the years of my journeyings are a hundred and thirty. Few and painful10 have all11 the years of my life been, and they have not reached the years of the lifetime of my fathers in the days of their journeyings.” 47:10 Then Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and then went out from the presence of Pharaoh.

47:11 So Joseph settled his father and his brothers, and he gave them a possession12 in the land of Egypt, in the best part of the land, in the land of Rameses,13 just as Pharaoh had commanded. 47:12 And Joseph also provided food for his father and his brothers and all his father’s household, according to the number of their little ones.

47:13 But there was no food in all the land, because the famine was very severe; and the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan wasted away14 because of the famine. 47:14 And Joseph took in15 all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan as payment16 for the grain which they were buying; and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s palace.17 47:15 When the money from the land of Egypt and from the land of Canaan was gone,18 all Egypt19 came to Joseph, saying, “Give us food! and, “Why should we die20 in your presence because our money has run out?”

47:16 Then Joseph said, “Bring your livestock, and I will give you food21 for your livestock, if your money has run out.” 47:17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them food for their horses, and for the livestock of their flocks, and for the livestock of their herds, and for their donkeys.22 And he led them through that year with bread in exchange for livestock.

47:18 When that year was over,23 they came to him in the next year and said to him, “We cannot hide from my lord that since the money is used up, and the livestock and the animals belong to my lord, nothing remains before my lord except our bodies and our land. 47:19 Why should we die in your sight, both we and our lands? Buy us and our land for food, and we and our land will be servants24 to Pharaoh. And give us seed that we may live25 and not die, and that the land may not become desolate.”

47:20 So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, because the Egyptians sold each man his field, for the famine was severe on them. And the land became Pharaoh’s. 47:21 And he put all the people into bondage26 from one end of the border of Egypt to the other end of it. 47:22 Only the land of the priests did he not purchase, for the priests had an allotment from Pharaoh, and they ate from their allotment that Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land.

47:23 And Joseph said to the people, “Since I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed for you, sow27 the land. 47:24 And when28 you gather in the crop,29 give30 the fifth part to Pharaoh, and the four parts will be yours for seed for the fields and for you to eat,31 and for those in your households to eat and for your little ones.” 47:25 And they said, “You have saved our lives! Let us find favor in the eyes of my lord and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.”

47:26 So Joseph made it a statute,32 which is in effect33 to this day over the land of Egypt: one fifth belongs to Pharaoh. Only the land of the priests alone did not become Pharaoh’s.

47:27 Israel settled34 in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen, and they possessed land35 in it; and they were fruitful and they multiplied exceedingly.36

47:28 Jacob lived37 in the land of Egypt seventeen years; and all38 the years of the life of Jacob were a hundred and forty seven. 47:29 And the time39 for Israel to die drew near, and he called for his son Joseph, and said to him, ““If now I have found favor in your sight, put your hand under my thigh40 and show me kindness and faithfulness:41 do not bury me in Egypt, 47:30 but when I sleep42 with my fathers carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burying place.” And he said, “I will do as you say.”

47:31 And he said, “Swear to me.” So he swore to him. Then Israel bowed down43 at the head44 of his bed.
