25:1 Should controversy arise between people15 and they go to the court for judgment and the judges16 judge them, they shall exonerate17 the just but condemn18 the evil. 25:2 Then19 if the evil one be considered deserving of a beating,20 the judge shall force him to lie down and be beaten in his presence according to the extent of his wickedness, by number. 25:3 Forty blows he may administer21 but no more lest, having struck him with more than these, your brother might be viewed by you with contempt. 25:4 You must not muzzle your22 ox when it is treading grain.
Respect for the Sanctity of Others25:5 If brothers live together and one of them dies without having a son, the dead mans wife must not remarry to an outside stranger; her brother-in-law must go to her, take her as wife, and perform the duty of a brother-in-law.23 25:6 Then24 the first born she bears will succeed in the name of the25 dead brother, thus preventing his name from being blotted out of Israel. 25:7 If the man does not want to marry his sister-in-law, then she26 shall go to the elders at the gate and say, My brother-in-law refuses to preserve27 his brothers name in Israel; he is unwilling to perform the duty of a brother-in-law to me. 25:8 Then the elders of his city shall call out and speak to him. If he stands up and says, I do not want to marry her, 25:9 then his sister-in-law will approach him in view of the elders, remove his sandal from his foot, and spit in his face.28 She will then respond, Thus may it be done to any man who does not do the duty of a brother-in-law on behalf of his brothers house. 25:10 His family name will be recorded29 in Israel as the house of the de-sandaled one. 25:11 Should men get into a hand-to-hand fight,30 and the wife of one of them should get close in order to help her husband against his attacker, and she should reach out her hand and grab his genitals,31 25:12 then you shall cut off her handdo not pity her. 25:13 You must not have32 in your bag different stone weights, a large and a small. 25:14 You must not have in your house different ephahs,33 a large and a small. 25:15 You must have an accurate34 and correct35 stone and an accurate and correct ephah, so that your life might be extended upon the land that the LORD your God is about to give you. 25:16 For anyone who does these things is detestable36 to the LORD your God, anyone at all doing an injustice.
Treatment of the Amalekites25:17 Remember what Amalek did to you on your way from Egypt, 25:18 how he met you along the way and cut off all your stragglers in the rear of the march when you were exhausted and spent; and he was unafraid of God.37 25:19 When, therefore, the LORD your God has brought you rest from all your surrounding enemies in the land he38 is giving you as an inheritance to possess, you must wipe the remembrance of Amalek from beneath the heavensdo not forget!39
