24:1 If a man takes a woman as his wife13 and it turns out that she does not please him14 because he has found something offensive15 in her, then he may draw up a divorce document, give it to her, and expel her from his house. 24:2 When she has left him16 she may go and become someone else’s wife. 24:3 Should the second17 husband hate her and then divorce her,18 give her the papers, and expel her from his house, or if the second husband who took her as wife should die, 24:4 her first husband who divorced her19 will not be able to return and remarry20 her after she has become ritually impure, for that is detestable to the LORD;21 you must not bring sin upon the land22 which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance. 24:5 When a man is newly married,23 he need not go into the army nor be obligated with anything;24 he must be free to stay at home for a full year and bring joy to25 the wife he has married. 24:6 One should not take either lower or upper millstones as an earnest on a loan for such an earnest is like life itself. 24:7 If a man be found kidnapping a person from among his brothers, fellow Israelites, and should regard him as mere property and sell him, that thief must die; thus you will expunge26 evil from among you.

Respect for Human Dignity

24:8 Be careful in a leprosy plague to follow precisely1 all that the Levitical priests instruct you; as I commanded them, so you should do. 24:9 Remember what the LORD your God did to Miriam along the way when you came out of Egypt.2 24:10 When you make any kind of loan to your neighbor you may not go to his house to claim his earnest. 24:11 You must stand outside and the person3 to whom you made the loan will bring the earnest outside to you. 24:12 If the person4 is poor you may not use his pledge as a covering.5 24:13 You must by all means return the pledged item to him at sunset so that he might lie in his garment and bless you for it; it will be considered a righteous thing by the LORD your God. 24:14 You must not oppress a lowly and poor servant, whether one from among your fellow Israelites6 or from the sojourners who are in your land and villages. 24:15 You must pay his wage that very7 day, before the sun sets, for his life depends on it ;8 lest he cry out against you to the LORD and it become a sin to you. 24:16 Fathers must not be put to death for children9 nor children10 for fathers; each must be put to death for his own sin. 24:17 You must not pervert justice due a sojourner or orphan; nor take a widow’s garment as a loan pledge. 24:18 Remember that you were a slave in Egypt and that the LORD your God redeemed you from there; therefore, I am commanding you to do all this. 24:19 Whenever you reap your harvest in the field and leave some standing grain there,11 you must not return to get it; it should go to the sojourner, orphan, and widow so that the LORD your God might bless every work you do.12 24:20 When you beat your olive tree you must not do so a second time;13 the olives belong to the sojourner, orphan, and widow. 24:21 When you gather the grapes of your vineyard you must not do so a second time;14 they should go to the sojourner, orphan, and widow. 24:22 Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore, I am commanding you to do all this.
