Purity in Public Worship

23:1 A man with crushed testicles1 or severed penis may not enter the assembly of the LORD.2 23:2 A bastard may not enter the assembly of the LORD; to the tenth generation no one related to him3 may do so.4 23:3 An Ammonite or Moabite5 may not enter the assembly of the LORD; to the tenth generation none of their descendants6 shall do so,7 forever,8 23:4 for they did not meet you with food and beverage9 on the way as you came from Egypt and, furthermore, they10 hired against you Balaam son of Beor of Pethor in Aram Naharaim to curse you. 23:5 But the LORD your God was unwilling to pay heed to Balaam and he11 changed the curse to a blessing, for the LORD your God loved12 you. 23:6 You may not seek peace and well-being13 for them through all the ages to come.14 23:7 You must not hate an Edomite, for he is your brother; you must not hate an Egyptian, for you were a foreigner15 in his land. 23:8 Children born to them of the third generation16 may enter the assembly of the LORD.

Purity in Personal Hygiene

23:9 When you go out as an army17 against your enemies, guard yourselves against anything impure.18 23:10 If there is someone among you who is impure because of some nocturnal accident,19 he must leave the camp; he may not immediately re-enter.20 23:11 When evening sets in he must wash in water and then at sunset may re-enter21 the camp. 23:12 You shall have a place outside the camp to serve as a latrine.22 23:13 You shall have a spade among your other implements and when you relieve yourself23 outside you must dig a hole with it and then turn and cover your waste.24 23:14 For the LORD your God walks about in the middle of your camp to deliver you and give your enemies over to you; thus, your camp should be holy, so that he might not see anything unseemly25 among you and turn away from you.

Purity in the Treatment of the Nonprivileged

23:15 You must not return an escaped slave to his master when he has run away to you. 23:16 Indeed, he may live among you in any place he chooses, in any of 26 your villages that seems best to him; you must not oppress him.

Purity in Cultic Personnel

23:17 There must never be a sacred prostitute27 from among the young women28 of Israel nor a sacred male prostitute29 from the young men30 of Israel. 23:18 No pay of a harlot31 or wage of a dog32 may be brought into the temple of the LORD your God for any vow for both of these are detestable to him.33

Respect for Others’ Property

23:19 You may not lend with interest to your brother, whether interest of money, food, or anything else that has been lent with the intent of interest. 23:20 To a foreigner you may do so,1 but not to your brother so that the LORD your God might bless you in all you undertake2 on the land to which you are going to possess it. 23:21 When you make3 a vow to the LORD your God you must not delay in fulfilling it for he4 will surely hold you to account5 as a sinner.6 23:22 If you refrain from making a vow, it will not be sinful.7 23:23 Whatever you say8 you must be careful to do the thing you have promised,9 such as what you have vowed to the LORD your God as a freewill offering. 23:24 When you enter the vineyard of your neighbor you may eat grapes as you please to your satisfaction,10 but you may not take a11 container. 23:25 When you go into the ripe grain fields of your neighbor you may pluck off the kernels with your hand, but you may not use a sickle on your neighbor’s ripe grain.12
