22:1 You must not observe your brothers ox or sheep going astray and close your eyes1 to them you must without fail return them to your brother. 22:2 If your brother does not live2 near you or you do not know him, then you must corral it at your house and let it stay with you until your brother looks for it; then you must return it to him. 22:3 You shall do the same to his donkey, his clothes, or anything else your brother has lost and you have found; you must not hide yourself. 22:4 Do not observe your brothers donkey or ox fallen along the road and avoid them;3 indeed, you must help him get them up. 22:5 A woman must not wear mens clothing,4 nor should a man dress up in womens clothing, for all who do this are an offense5 to the LORD your God. 22:6 If a birds nest happen to come to your notice along the way, whether in a tree or on the ground, and there are chicks or eggs upon which6 the mother is sitting you must not take the mother from the young. 22:7 You must be sure to let the mother go but you may take the young for yourself. Do this so that it might go well with you and that you might have a long life. 22:8 If you build a new house, you must construct a guard rail on your roof to avoid bringing culpability to yourself7 in the event someone should fall from it.
Illustrations of the Principle of Purity22:9 You must not sow your vineyard with two kinds of seed lest the whole thing, the seed you sow and the produce of the vineyard, be affected.8 22:10 You must not plow with an ox and donkey together. 22:11 You must not wear clothing with large meshes,9 wool and linen together. 22:12 You shall make yourselves tassels10 for the four skirts of the clothing you wear.11
Purity in the Marriage Relationship22:13 If a man should marry12 a wife, have sexual intercourse with her, and then reject13 her, 22:14 accusing her of impropriety14 and defaming her reputation15 by saying, I married this woman but when I became intimate16 with her I discovered she was not a virgin, 22:15 then the father and mother of the girl shall obtain and produce17 the signs of virginity18 for the elders of the city at the gate. 22:16 The girls father shall say to the elders, I gave my daughter to this man and he has rejected19 her. 22:17 Moreover, he has raised accusations of impropriety by saying, I did not find your daughter to be a virgin, but these are the signs of my daughters virginity! The covering will then be spread20 before the citys elders. 22:18 The elders of that city will then seize the man and punish21 him. 22:19 They will fine him one hundred shekels of silver and give them to the girls father for he ruined the reputation of an Israelite virgin. She will then become his wife and he may not divorce her22 as long as he lives. 22:20 But if it is true that the girl could produce no signs of virginity, 22:21 the men of her city shall bring the girl to the door of her fathers house and shall stone her to death, for she has done a foolish thing23 in Israel by playing the harlot in her fathers house; thus you shall purge24 evil from your midst. 22:22 If a man be caught25 lying with a married woman26 both must die, the man lying with the woman and the woman; thus you shall purge27 evil from Israel. 22:23 If a virgin girl should be engaged to a man and another man find her in the city and lie with her, 22:24 you must bring the two of them to the gate of that city and stone them to death, the girl because she did not cry out though in the city and the man because he dishonored28 his neighbors fiancée; thus you shall purge29 evil from your midst. 22:25 But if the man found the engaged girl in the field and seized and raped30 her, then only the man who did this31 must die. 22:26 You must not do anything to the girlshe has done nothing deserving of death; for just as someone32 rises up against another33 and kills him, so is this case. 22:27 For he found her in the field, the engaged girl cried out, but there was no one to save her. 22:28 If a man comes across34 a virgin girl who is not engaged and overpowers35 and rapes her and they be discovered, 22:29 the man who has raped her must pay her36 father fifty shekels of silver and she must become his wife because he has humiliated her; he may not divorce her as long as he lives. 22:30 A man may not marry37 his fathers former38 wife nor even look upon her nakedness.39
