Confirm Class Completion

Solution

IBS 2.7 > Faciliator Functions

Many IBS courses contain Lesson Self Checks (LSCs) and Unit Exams (UEs). These assessments are scored by the system; these scores form the basis for the Class Completion function. The minimum completion criteria for LSCs and UEs are set by the IBS System Administrator and/or your Group Administrator. If your course includes these assessments, you will see a class completion progress indicator in the upper left corner of your classroom screen. Students can click either Lessons or Units to see the minimum criteria and monitor their progress toward meeting them.

It is important to understand that these are minimum class completion criteria, not grades, and that they apply only to LSC and UE scores. As a facilitator, you will probably want to establish additional assessments for students in your class. For example, you may decide to set additional expectations for projects, papers, participation in Class Discussions, etc. You can define these additional assessments in your grading protocol.

When a student has completed all of the LSCs and UEs in a class and achieved at least the minimum score on each one, he or she may click the Complete Class button, located in the upper left corner of the classroom screen. This will change his class completion status from Working to Pending.

You can view the class completion status for each of your students. From the sidebar menu, select Facilitators > Maintain Student Rosters. In the dropdown menu, select the class you want to view.

The possible statuses are:

  • Working: All students enrolled in your class will have this status until it is changed. The student can change it to Pending, or the facilitator can change it to Incomplete.
  • Pending: This indicates that the student has met the minimum criteria for LSCs and UEs, and has clicked the Complete Class button in the classroom. As the facilitator, you should determine whether he has also met any additional criteria that you have set.
  • Complete: If you decide that a student with a status of Pending has met all of your completion criteria, you can change his status to Complete. See instructions below. Note: you cannot “undo” this operation, so be certain that you have checked the student’s work carefully before marking him Complete.
  • Incomplete: If a student has failed to complete the class requirements within the allotted time, you may mark him/her Incomplete. Once this happens, the student’s status cannot be changed to any other status. He is no longer eligible for a refund and cannot be dropped from the class; however, he will continue to have access to the course materials in the online classroom.

These actions are summarized in the following diagram:

Changing your students' class completion status

  1. From the sidebar menu, select Facilitators > Assess Performance. A list of your facilitated classes appears.
  2. Locate the class for which you want to update the student's status. In the Action column, click Assess Performance.
Note: You cannot view or update student performance data until your grading protocol has been defined. If you have not yet defined the grading protocol, click Undefined in the Grading Protocol column. After defining the grading protocol, return to this screen and click Assess Performance.
  3. A table listing the students in your class will appear. Their current class completion status is displayed. To change it, click Edit.
  4. The student's detailed grading record appears. Select the appropriate class completion status from the dropdown menu, then click Save Record.

See Enter Student Grades (Assess Performance) for information about other functionality on this screen.
