Interactive Questions, Self Checks, and Unit Exams

A video tutorial is available on this topic. Select Typical Interactions in the IBS Classroom from the IBS Help Page or click here to view it.

Many IBS courses provide opportunities for students to assess their understanding of the material being presented.

  • Interactive questions. These are interspersed throughout the material so that you can check and reinforce your grasp of the concepts as you study. When you answer the questions, you can press the Check Answer button to receive immediate feedback for your answer. In most cases, you will be given three attempts to get the correct answer. On the third attempt, IBS will display the correct answer and, in some cases, direct you to the section of the course material that explains the answer.
  • Lesson Self Checks (LSC). These are quizzes at the end of each lesson. You may repeat a LSC as many times as you like. Only your most recent score for each LSC is recorded; this score is part of the criteria used by IBS to determine if you have successfully completed the class. The minimum score required is set by the Academic Group Administrator for the class.
  • Unit Exams. Some courses may also include Unit Exams at the end of a unit. You may take each Unit Exam only once. Your score is recorded and is part of the class completion criteria.

These assessments may include several types of questions, which are described below. (Note: Lesson Self Checks and Unit Exams include only questions which can be scored objectively by a computer program, so they are limited to True/False, Single Multiple Choice, and Single Word Text Entry questions.)

  • True/False questions present a statement for you to evaluate. If you believe the statement to be true, based on what you have read in the lesson material, click the "True" choice. Otherwise, click "False".
  • Multiple Choice questions present a statement with several possible endings.
    • In a Single Multiple Choice question, only one of the choices is correct. The computer will not allow you to select more than one answer.
    • In a Multiple Multiple Choice question, there are several correct answers. If you select some of the correct ones, but not all, the computer will tell you that you are partially correct and encourage you to try again.
  • Text Entry questions come in two forms.
    • Single Word Text Entry questions are statements in which you are asked to fill in a blank with a single word or very short phrase. For best results, use the same word(s) used when the topic was discussed in the text. Using a synonym may result in an "Incorrect" response.
    • Multiline Text Entry questions require a longer response, generally a complete sentence or more. Since these cannot be graded objectively by a computer, the computer's "correct" answer will state, "Your answer should be similar to the following" and will give a sample answer. You should use your own judgment as to whether your response conveys the same meaning as the sample answer.
  • Matching questions contain lists of 3 to 7 items in a left-hand column. Each item corresponds to one item in a right-hand column. For example, the left-hand column may contain a Scripture reference, and the right-hand column may contain an interpretation of that Scripture. Your task is to match each item in the left column with the correct item in the right column. Click the number next to the item to highlight it, then click the box next to the corresponding item to place that number in it. Continue until all boxes have been filled, then click the Check Answer button to see if your responses are correct. If you are partially correct, the incorrect responses will be removed and you may try again.

  • Drag and Drop questions are generally of two types: geography or charts. In a geography question, a map is provided and you are to click and drag labels (rivers, cities, countries, etc.) to the correct location on the map. In a chart question, you click and drag descriptions of biblical events into columns containing the Scripture passages in which the events occur. When you are finished, click the Check Answer button. If any of your answers are incorrect, you may click Reset and try again. After three tries, the computer will place the events in the correct columns for you.

  • Life Notebook questions ask you to write an essay on a particular topic. There are no "right" or "wrong" answers for Life Notebook questions. The purpose of these questions is to encourage you to think and pray about what you have learned and how to apply it to your life. When you click the Life Notebook icon, a text editor window opens in the left panel of the classroom screen.  See the article on Your Life Notebook for more information.
