33:1 And Jacob lifted up his eyes1 and saw that Esau was coming,2 and with him3 were four hundred men. So he divided the children among Leah, and Rachel, and the two maidservants. 33:2 He put4 the maidservants and their children in front, and Leah and her children behind them, and Rachel and Joseph behind them.5 33:3 But he himself passed over before them, and he bowed himself low to the ground6 seven times as he drew near7 to his brother. 33:4 But Esau ran to meet him and embraced him and fell on his neck and kissed him; and they wept. 33:5 Then he lifted up his eyes8 and saw the women and the children, and he said, Who are these with you? And he said, The children whom God has graciously given9 to your servant. 33:6 Then the maidservants drew near, they and their children, and bowed down. 33:7 Then Leah also drew near with her children and they bowed down. And after that Joseph and Rachel drew near and they bowed down.
33:8 And he said, What did you intend10 by all these droves11 that I met? And he said, To find favor in the sight of my lord.
33:9 But Esau said, I have plenty, my brother. Let what belongs to you be yours. 33:10 And Jacob said, No, please. If I have found favor in your sight, accept12 my gift from my hand; for it is because I have seen your face, which is13 like seeing the face of God14 now that15 you have accepted16 me. 33:11 Please take my present17 that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me and because I have enough.18 And he pressed him, and so he took it.
33:12 And Esau said,19 Let us be going,20 and I will go in front of you. 33:13 And he said to him, My lord knows that the children are tender, and that the sheep and cattle nursing their young are my responsibility;21 if they are driven too hard one day, all the animals will die. 33:14 Let my lord pass over before his servant, and I will move along gently at the pace22 of the droves before me and at the pace of the children, until I come to my lord to Seir.
33:15 Then Esau said, Let me station23 with you some of the people who are with me. But Jacob asked,24 Why do that?25 Let me find favor26 in the sight of my lord.
33:16 So on that day Esau made his way back27 to Seir. 33:17 But Jacob28 traveled to Succoth, and he built for himself a house and made stalls29 for his livestock. That is why the name of the place was called30 Sukkoth.
33:18 And Jacob came in peace to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, after he came from Paddan Aram; and he camped near31 the city. 33:19 And he purchased the portion of the field on which he pitched his tent from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, for a hundred pieces of money.32 33:20 And there he set up33 an altar and called it El Elohe Israel.34
