Jacob Wrestles at Peniel

32:1 So Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God1 met2 him. 32:2 And Jacob said when he saw them, “This is the camp of God!” And he called the name of that place Mahanaim.3

32:3 Then Jacob sent messengers4 before him to Esau his brother to the land of Seir, the region5 of Edom. 32:4 And he charged them, saying, “Thus you will say to my lord, to Esau: `Thus says your servant6 Jacob, I have been staying with Laban and remained until now. 32:5 I have oxen and donkeys, sheep and servants and maidservants; and so I have sent7 this message8 to inform my lord, so that I might find9 favor in your sight’.”

32:6 The messengers returned10 to Jacob, saying, “We went to your brother, to Esau, and he also is coming to meet you with11 four hundred men with him.”

32:7 Then Jacob was terribly afraid and distressed. So he divided into two camps12 the people who were with him, as well as the flocks and the herds and the camels. 32:8 And he said, “If Esau comes against13 one camp and attacks it, then the surviving camp will be able to escape.14 32:9 Then Jacob said, “O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, O LORD, who said to me, `Return to your land and to your relatives and I will deal well15 with you,’ 32:10 I am not worthy of all the loving kindness and faithfulness16 that you have shown17 your servant; for with my staff I crossed over this Jordan, but now I have become two camps. 32:11 Deliver me,18 I pray, from the hand19 of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him, lest he come and attack me, the mother with the children.20 32:12 But you21 said, `I will surely deal well22 with you, and I will make23 your descendants24 like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted25 because of abundance’.”

32:13 And he stayed26 there that night; and he took from that which was with him27 a gift28 for Esau his brother: 32:14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, 32:15 thirty female camels and their young, forty cows and ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys. 32:16 And he entrusted them to29 his servants, each drove by itself;30 and he said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and keep some distance between the droves.” 32:17 And he instructed the first, saying, “When Esau my brother meets you and asks you, saying, `To whom do you belong?’31 and `Where are you going?’ and `Whose are these before you?’ 32:18 then you will say,32 `They belong33 to your servant, to Jacob;34 it is a gift sent to my lord, to Esau.35 And in fact he is behind us’.”

32:19 And he also instructed the second, also the third, also all that were going after the droves, saying, `You will say the same thing36 to Esau when you find him.’ 32:20 And also say, `Your servant Jacob is behind us’.”37 For he said,38 “I will appease39 him40 with the gift that goes before me; and afterward I will see him41—perhaps he will accept me.”42 32:21 So the gift passed over before him while43 he himself spent that night in the camp.

32:22 And in that night Jacob quickly took44 his two wives, his two maidservants, and his eleven sons and passed over45 the ford Jabbok. 32:23 He took them46 and sent them across the stream; and he sent across all his possessions.47 32:24 So Jacob was left alone. And a man48 wrestled49 with him until daybreak.50 32:25 And when the man51 saw that he could not prevail over Jacob,52 he touched53 the socket of his hip, so the socket of Jacob’s hip was out of joint when he wrestled with him.

32:26 Then the man54 said, “Let me go for the day is breaking.”55 But Jacob56 said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”57 32:27 And he said to him, “What is your name?”58 And he said, “Jacob.” 32:28 He said,59 “No longer will your name be called Jacob, but Israel,60 for you have fought61 with God and with men and you have prevailed.”

32:29 Then Jacob asked and said, “Please tell me your name.”62 But he said, “Why63 do you ask my name?” And he blessed64 him there.

32:30 So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel,65 “Because I have seen God face to face66 and I67 have been delivered.”68

32:31 And the sun rose69 over him as he crossed over Penuel; but70 he was limping because of his hip. 32:32 That is why the Israelites do not eat the sinew which is attached to the socket of the hip to this day,71 because he touched72 the socket of Jacob’s hip near the attached sinew.
