13:1 So Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and everything he had, and Lot with him, into the Negev. 13:2 Now1 Abram was very wealthy2 in livestock, silver and gold.
13:3 And he went from place to place3 from the Negev as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been in the beginning, between Bethel and Ai, 13:4 to the place where he had first built the altar; and there Abram made proclamation in the name of the LORD.
13:5 Now Lot, who was traveling4 with Abram, also had5 flocks and herds and tents.6 13:6 But the land could7 not support their living together,8 for their possessions were great, and they were not able to live9 together. 13:7 So there was strife10 between Abrams herdsmen and the herdsmen of Lot.11 Now the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land at that time.12
13:8 Abram13 said to Lot, Let there be no strife14 between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we15 are brothers. 13:9 Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself now from me. If you go16 to the left hand, then Ill go to the right;17 but if you go18 to the right hand, then Ill go to the left.19
13:10 Then Lot lifted up his eyes and saw20 the whole region21 of the Jordan, that all of it was well-watered (this is before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah22) like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, all the way to Zoar.23 13:11 Lot24 chose for himself the whole region of the Jordan and traveled25 toward the east.
So the relatives separated from each other:26 13:12 Abram settled27 in the land of Canaan, but Lot settled among the cities of the Jordan region28 and pitched his tents29 next to Sodom. 13:13 Now30 the people of Sodom31 were exceedingly wicked sinners against the LORD.32
13:14 The LORD33 said to Abram after Lot had separated himself from him, Lift up your eyes and look34 from the place where you are, to the north, to the south, to the east, and to the west; 13:15 for all the land that you see, to you I will give it and to your seed35 forever. 13:16 And I will make your seed36 like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone is able to number the dust of the earth, then37 your seed38 also can be numbered.39 13:17 Arise, walk throughout40 the land to its length and its breadth, for I am giving it to you.
13:18 So Abram moved his tents and went to live41 by the oaks of Mamre which is in Hebron, and he built an altar there to the LORD.
