9:1 Then God blessed Noah and his sons, and he said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. 9:2 And the fear of you¹ and the dread of you will fall² on every living creature of the earth, and on every bird of the air, and on everything that creeps on the ground, and on all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hand.³ 9:3 Every moving thing that lives will be for your food.⁴ As I gave you⁵ the green plants, I now give⁶ you everything.

9:4 But⁷ meat⁸ with its life (that is,⁹ its blood) in it¹⁰, you must not eat. 9:5 And for your lifeblood¹¹ I will surely exact punishment,¹² from¹³ every living creature I will exact punishment; and from each person¹⁴ I will exact the punishment¹⁵ of the life of the individual,¹⁶ certainly the one who was his relative.¹⁷

9:6 “Whoever sheds human blood¹⁸
by others¹⁹ will his blood be shed;
for in the image²⁰ of God
has he made mankind.”

9:7 But as for you,²¹ be fruitful and multiply; increase abundantly on the earth and multiply on it.”

9:8 God said²² to Noah and to his sons with him,²³ 9:9 “I now establish²⁴ my covenant with you and with your descendants²⁵ after you, 9:10 and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the animals, and every living creature of the earth with you, all those that came out of the ark with you, even every living creature of the earth. 9:11 I establish²⁶ my covenant with you: Never again²⁷ will all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”

9:12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making²⁸ between me and you and everything that has the breath of life that is with you, a covenant²⁹ for perpetual³⁰ generations. 9:13 I set³¹ my rainbow³² in the clouds, and it will become the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 9:14 Whenever³³ I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 9:15 then I will remember my covenant which is between me and you and all living creatures of all flesh. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all flesh. 9:16 When³⁴ the rainbow is in the clouds, I will look on it, that I may remember³⁵ the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures, with all flesh that is on the earth.”

9:17 So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

9:18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Now Ham was the father of Canaan.³⁶ 9:19 These were the sons of Noah; and from these was the whole earth populated.³⁷

9:20 Noah,³⁸ a man of the soil,³⁹ began to plant a vineyard. 9:21 When⁴⁰ he drank some of the wine, he became drunk, and uncovered himself⁴¹ inside his tent. 9:22 Ham, the father of Canaan,⁴² saw the nakedness⁴³ of his father and told his two brothers outside. 9:23 So Shem and Japheth took the garment⁴⁴ and placed it on their shoulders; then they walked in backwards and covered up the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned⁴⁵ the other way, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.⁴⁶

9:24 When Noah awoke⁴⁷ from his wine he learned⁴⁸ what his youngest son had done⁴⁹ to him. 9:25 So he said,

“Cursed be⁵⁰ Canaan!
The lowest of slaves⁵¹
will he be to his brothers.”

9:26 He also said,

“Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem!⁵²
Let Canaan be the slave of Shem.⁵³
9:27 Let God enlarge Japheth,⁵⁴
Let him live⁵⁵ in the tents of Shem
and let Canaan be a slave to him.”

9:28 Noah⁵⁶ lived after the flood 350 years. 9:29 And all the lifetime of Noah was 950 years, and then he died.
