The Covenant of God through Noah

9:1 Then God blessed Noah and his sons, and he said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. 9:2 And the fear of you1 and the dread of you will fall2 on every living creature of the earth, and on every bird of the air, and on everything that creeps on the ground, and on all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hand.3 9:3 Every moving thing that lives will be for your food.4 As I gave you5 the green plants, I now give6 you everything.

9:4 But7 meat8 with its life (that is,9 its blood) in it10, you must not eat. 9:5 And for your lifeblood11 I will surely exact punishment,12 from13 every living creature I will exact punishment; and from each person14 I will exact the punishment15 of the life of the individual,16 certainly the one who was his relative.17

9:7 But as for you,21 be fruitful and multiply; increase abundantly on the earth and multiply on it.”

9:8 God said22 to Noah and to his sons with him,23 9:9 “I now establish24 my covenant with you and with your descendants25 after you, 9:10 and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the animals, and every living creature of the earth with you, all those that came out of the ark with you, even every living creature of the earth. 9:11 I establish26 my covenant with you: Never again27 will all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”

9:12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making28 between me and you and everything that has the breath of life that is with you, a covenant29 for perpetual30 generations. 9:13 I set31 my rainbow32 in the clouds, and it will become the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 9:14 Whenever33 I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 9:15 then I will remember my covenant which is between me and you and all living creatures of all flesh. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all flesh. 9:16 When34 the rainbow is in the clouds, I will look on it, that I may remember35 the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures, with all flesh that is on the earth.”

9:17 So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

The Oracle of Noah—the Curse of Canaan

9:18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Now Ham was the father of Canaan.36 9:19 These were the sons of Noah; and from these was the whole earth populated.37

9:20 Noah,38 a man of the soil,39 began to plant a vineyard. 9:21 When40 he drank some of the wine, he became drunk, and uncovered himself41 inside his tent. 9:22 Ham, the father of Canaan,42 saw the nakedness43 of his father and told his two brothers outside. 9:23 So Shem and Japheth took the garment44 and placed it on their shoulders; then they walked in backwards and covered up the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned45 the other way, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.46

9:24 When Noah awoke47 from his wine he learned48 what his youngest son had done49 to him. 9:25 So he said,

9:26 He also said,

9:28 Noah56 lived after the flood 350 years. 9:29 And all the lifetime of Noah was 950 years, and then he died.
