5:1 And you, Son of man, take a sharp sword, a razor¹ for yourself and pass it over your head and your beard.² Then take balances for weighing and divide the hair. 5:2 A third you will burn in the fire in the midst of the city when the days of the siege are completed. And you will take a third and beat it with a sword all around the city, and a third you will scatter to the wind, and I will unsheathe a sword after them. 5:3 And you will take from there a few strands³and bind them in the ends of your garment.⁴ 5:4 And again you will take more of them and you will cast them in the midst of the fire, and you will burn them with fire. From it a fire will go out to all the house of Israel. 5:5 Thus says the Lord GOD: This is Jerusalem, I have set her in the midst of the nations with lands all around her. 5:6 She has rebelled against my laws and my statutes becoming more wicked than the nations⁵ and the lands around her, for they have rejected my laws, and as for my statutes, they do not walk in them. 5:7 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because you are more tumultuous than the nations which are around you,⁶ you have not walked in my statutes and have not carried out my laws; you have not even observed⁷ the laws of the nations which are around you; 5:8 therefore thus says the Lord GOD: I am against you, even I, and I will carry out judgments in your midst in the sight of the nations. 5:9 And I will carry out against you what I have never done and the like of which I will never do again, because of all your abominations. 5:10 Therefore fathers will eat their⁸ sons in your midst⁹ and sons will eat fathers, and I will carry out judgments against you, and I will scatter all that remain among you to every wind. 5:11 Therefore, as I live, says the Lord GOD, surely because you defiled my sanctuary with all your detestable things and with all your abominations, I will shear,¹⁰ my eye will not spare, nor will I have pity.¹¹ 5:12 One third of you will die of plague and be overcome by famine in your midst;¹² a third of you will fall by the sword around you;¹³ one third I will scatter to every wind and a sword I will unsheathe after them. 5:13 My anger shall be spent, and I will cause my wrath to rest upon them, then I will be comforted. And they will know that I the LORD, have spoken in my jealousy¹⁴ when I spend my wrath against them. 5:14 I will make you a desolation and a reproach among the nations which are around you, before every passerby. 5:15 And you will be¹⁵ a reproach and a taunt,¹⁶ a warning and a horror among the nations which are around you when I execute judgments against you in anger and wrath and reproofs of wrath; I the LORD have spoken. 5:16 When I sent against them wicked arrows of famine which are for destruction,¹⁷ which I will send to destroy you, and more famine I will bring upon you and will break your staff of bread.¹⁸ 5:17 I will send famine and wild beasts against you and they will bereave you,¹⁹ and pestilence and blood will pass through you; and I will bring a sword against you. I the LORD have spoken.
