The Fifth Blow: Disease77

9:1 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh and tell him, ‘Thus says Yahweh the God of the Hebrews, “Release my people that they may serve me. 9:2 For if you refuse to release them,1 and continue holding them,2 9:3 then the hand of Yahweh will surely bring3 a very terrible plague4 on your livestock that is in the field, on the horses, on the donkeys, on the camels,5 on the herd and on the flock. 9:4 And Yahweh will put a division6 between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt, and nothing7 will die of all that the Israelites have.8

9:5 Yahweh set9 an appointed time, saying, “Tomorrow Yahweh will do this10 in the land.” 9:6 And Yahweh did it11 on the next day;12 and all13 the livestock of Egypt died, but of the livestock of the Israelites not one died 9:7 And Pharaoh sent to see,14 and indeed, none15 of the livestock of Israel had died. But the heart of Pharaoh was hardened,16 and he did not release the people.

The Sixth Blow: Boils17

9:8 And Yahweh said to Moses and to Aaron, “Take handfuls of soot18 from a furnace, and let Moses throw it19 into the air in the sight of Pharaoh. 9:9 And it will become fine dust over all the land of Egypt, and it will become boils breaking out and festering20 on humans and on beasts in all the land of Egypt.” 9:10 So they took soot of a furnace and stood before Pharaoh; and Moses threw it into the air, and it became festering boils breaking out.

9:11 But the magicians were not able to stand before Moses because of the boils, for boils were on the magicians and on all Egyptians. 9:12 And Yahweh hardened the heart of Pharaoh, and he did lot listen to them, just as Yahweh had spoken to Moses.

The Seventh Blow: Hail21

9:13 Yahweh said22 to Moses, “Rise up early in the morning and stand23 before Pharaoh, and say to him, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, ‘Release my people so that they may serve me. 9:14 For this time I will send all my plagues24 to your heart,25 and on your servants, and on your people, so that you may know there is no one like me in all the earth. 9:15 For by now I could have stretched out26 my hand and struck you and your people with pestilence, and you would have been destroyed27 from the earth. 9:16 But28 for this purpose I have caused you to stand29 in order to show you30 my strength, and in order that my name be declared31 in all the earth. 9:17 You are still exalting32 yourself against my people by33 not releasing them. 9:18 I am going to cause it to rain 34 a very severe hail about this time tomorrow, the likes of which35 has not been in Egypt from the day it was founded36 until now. 9:19 So now, send instructions37 to gather38 your livestock and all your possessions that are in the fields; every person39 and beast who may be found40 in the field and not gathered to the house—the hail will come down on him, and he will die.

9:20 Those41 who feared the word of Yahweh among the servants of Pharaoh, hurried to bring their42 servants and livestock into the house, 9:21 but those43 who did not take44 the word of Yahweh to heart, left their servants and their cattle45 in the field.

9:22 Then Yahweh said to Moses, Stretch out your hand to the heavens, that there may be46 hail in all the land of Egypt, on people and on animals,47 and on everything that grows48 in the field in the land of Egypt 9:23 When Moses stretched forth49 his rod toward the heavens, then Yahweh50 sent thunder51 and hail, and fire ran along the ground;52 so Yahweh caused it to rain hail on the land of Egypt. 9:24 So hail fell,53 and fire mingled54 with hail; the storm55 was very severe, the likes of which56 had not happened in all the land of Egypt since it had become a nation. 9:25 And the hail struck throughout all the land of Egypt all that was in the field, both57 people and animals; and everything that grows58 in the field the hail struck, and it broke in pieces all the trees of the field. 9:26 Only in the land of Goshen where the Israelites were was there no hail.

9:27 So Pharaoh sent and summoned Moses and Aaron, and said to them, “I have sinned this time!59 Yahweh is righteous, and I and my people are guilty.60 9:28 Pray to Yahweh, for the mighty61 thunderings and hail are enough;62 and I will release you and you will stay no longer.63

9:29 And Moses said to him, “When I leave the city64 I will spread my hands to Yahweh; the thunder will cease, and there will be no more hail, that you may know that the earth belongs to Yahweh.65 9:30 But as for you66 and your servants, I know that you do not fear67 Yahweh God.”

9:31 Now the68 flax and the barley were struck,69 for the barley was in the ear, and the flax70 was in bud. 9:32 But the wheat and the spelt71 were not struck, for they are later crops.72

9:33 So Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh, and he spread out his hands to Yahweh, and the thunder and the hail ceased, and the rain was not poured out on the earth. 9:34 When Pharaoh saw73 that the rain and the hail and the thunder ceased, he sinned again,74 and he hardened his heart, he and his servants. 9:35 So the heart of Pharaoh was hardened,75 and he did not release the Israelites, as Yahweh had spoken by the hand of Moses.
