11:1 Therefore, love the LORD your God and keep his obligations, that is, his statutes, ordinances, and commandments1 forever. 11:2 Bear in mind2 today that I am not speaking to your children who have not known or seen the instruction of the LORD your God, his greatness, strength,3 and power,4 11:3 or his signs and works that he did in the midst of Egypt to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his whole land; 11:4 what he did to the army of Egypt, their horses and chariots, when he made the waters of the Reed Sea5 to overwhelm them when they were in pursuit of you, and how he6 destroyed them to this very day; 11:5 what he did to you in the desert until you reached this place. 11:6 And what he did to Dathan and Abiram,7 sons of Eliab the Reubenite,8 when the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, their children, their tents, and everything that followed them, in the midst of all Israel11:7 but it is your very eyes that saw all the great deeds of the LORD that he did.
The Bounties of the Land of Promise11:8 Now pay attention9 to the whole commandment10 I am giving11 you today so that you might be strong enough to enter and possess the land to which you are headed,12 11:9 and that you might enjoy long life13 in the land that the LORD swore to give to your ancestors and their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey. 11:10 For the land to which you are headed as your possession14 is not like the land of Egypt from which you came, a land where you sowed seed and which you irrigated by hand15
like a vegetable garden. 11:11 Rather, the land to which you go as your possession is one of hills and valleys, a land that drinks water from the rains,16 11:12 one17 the LORD your God looks18 after. He is constantly attentive to it19 from the beginning to the end of the year.20 11:13 Now, if you conscientiously attend to my commandment which I am giving you today, that is, to love21 the LORD your God and to serve him with all your mind22 and being, 11:14 then, he says, I will send the rain of your land in its season, the former and the latter rains,23 so that you might have an ingathering of wheat, new wine, and oil. 11:15 I will provide24 pasturage25 for your livestock and you yourself will eat to satisfaction.26
Exhortation to Instruction and Obedience11:16 Watch yourselves lest you become deceived27 and turn to serve and worship other gods; 11:17 then the anger of the LORD will boil up28 against you and he will close up the heavens so that they do not rain, the land will not yield its produce, and you will soon die off from the good land that he29 is about to give you. 11:18 Ingrain these, my words, into your thinking30 and being, and tie them as a symbol upon your hands and let them be reminders31 on your forehead.32 11:19 Teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit down, while inside your houses, when you travel about, when you lie down, and when you arise. 11:20 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, 11:21 so that your days and those of your offspring might be extended in the land which the LORD promised to give to your ancestors, like the days of heaven itself.33 11:22 For if you are careful to observe all of this commandment I am giving youto love the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, and to cling to him11:23 then he34 will expel all these nations before you and you will dispossess nations greater and stronger than you. 11:24 Every place you set your foot35 will be yours, from the desert to Lebanon and from the river (that is, the Euphrates) as far as the Mediterranean,36 will be your border. 11:25 Nobody will be able to resist you;37 the LORD your God will spread the fear and terror of you over the whole land upon which you tread just as he told you.
Anticipation of a Blessing and Cursing Ceremony11:26 Take noteI am setting38 before you today a blessing and a curse,39 11:27 the blessing if you take to heart40 the commandments of the LORD your God that I am giving41 you today, 11:28 and the curse if you pay no heed42 to his43 commandments and turn from the way I am setting before44 you today in order to pursue45 other gods you have not known. 11:29 When the LORD your God brings you into the land you are to possess you must pronounce46 the blessing upon Mount Gerizim and the curse upon Mount Ebal.47 11:30 Are they not across the Jordan, toward the west,48 in the land of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah opposite Gilgal49 near the oaks of Moreh?50
11:31 For you are about to cross the Jordan in order to possess the land that the LORD your God is giving you; and you will possess and inhabit it. 11:32 Be certain to keep all the statutes and commandments that I am presenting51 to you today.
