10:1 At that same time the LORD said to me, Carve out for yourself two stone tablets like the first and ascend the mountain to me; also make for yourself a wooden ark. 10:2 I will write on the tablets the same words1 that were on the first tablets that you broke and you must put them into the ark. 10:3 So I made an ark of shittim2 wood and carved out two stone tablets just like the first ones. Then I ascended the mountain with the two tablets in my hands. 10:4 The LORD3 then wrote on the tablets the identical writing4 of the first tablets, the ten commandments,5 which he6 had spoken to you at the mountain from the midst of the fire at the time of that convocation, and he7 gave them to me. 10:5 Then I turned, descended the mountain, and placed the tablets into the ark I had madethey are still there just as the LORD commanded me.
Conclusion of the Historical Resume10:6 During those days8 Israel traveled from Beeroth Bene-Yaaqan9 to Moserah.10 There Aaron died and was buried and his son Eleazar was made priest in his place. 10:7 From there they went to Gudgodah,11 and from Gudgodah to Jotbahtah,12
a place of wadis. 10:8 At that time the LORD set apart the tribe of Levi13 to carry the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to serve him, and to render blessing14 in his name, as to this very day. 10:9 Therefore Levi has no allotment or inheritance15 among his brothers; the LORD is his inheritance394 just as the LORD your God told him. 10:10 As for me, I stayed at the mountain as at the first time, forty days and forty nights. The LORD listened to me that time as well and decided not to destroy you. 10:11 Then he16 said to me, Get up, set out before the people, and go and possess the land I promised to give to your ancestors.
An Exhortation to Love Both God and Mankind10:12 Now, Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you except to fear him,17 to walk in all his ways, to love him, and to serve him18 with all your mind19 and being? 10:13 Keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD that I am commanding you today for your own good. 10:14 The heavens, indeed the highest heavens,20 belong to the LORD your God as does the earth and everything in it. 10:15 However, only your ancestors did he21 decide22 to select,23 and he chose their descendants after them, even you, from all peoples as is apparent today. 10:16 Therefore, cleanse24 your heart and stop being so stiff-necked. 10:17 For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God and awesome warrior who is unbiased25 and takes no bribe, 10:18 who acts justly toward orphan and widow, and who loves aliens, giving them food and clothing. 10:19 You, therefore, love the alien because you were aliens in the land of Egypt. 10:20 Revere the LORD your God, serve him, cleave to him and take oaths only in his name. 10:21 He is the object of your praise and your God, the one who has done for you these great and awesome things that you26 have seen. 10:22 Your ancestors went down to Egypt as only seventy people but now the LORD your God has made you as numerous as the stars of the sky.
