19:1 Better is a poor person who walks in his integrity¹
than one who is perverse in his lips² and a fool.³
19:2 Also, the life⁴ without knowledge is not good,
and one who hastens with his feet⁵ misses the way.⁶
19:3 A person’s folly⁷ subverts⁸ his way,
although⁹ his heart rages¹⁰ against the LORD.
19:4 Wealth adds many friends,
but a poor person is separated¹¹ from his friend.¹²
19:5 A false witness¹³ will not go unpunished,
and the one who pours out lies will not escape.¹⁴
19:6 Many people seek favor¹⁵ from a ruler,
and everyone is the friend¹⁶ of the one who gives gifts.¹⁷
19:7 All the relatives¹⁸ of a poor person hate him.¹⁹
How much more do his friends go far from him!
He pursues with words, but they do not respond.²⁰
19:8 The one who acquires wisdom²¹ loves his own soul;²²
the one who preserves understanding shall prosper.²³
19:9 A false witness will not go unpunished,
and the one who pours out²⁴ lies will perish.²⁵
19:10 Luxury is not appropriate²⁶ for a fool.²⁷
How much less for a servant to rule over princes.²⁸
19:11 A person’s wisdom²⁹ postpones³⁰ anger;
and it is his glory³¹ to pass over³² an offense.
19:12 The raging of the king is like³³ the roaring of a lion,³⁴
but his favor is like the dew on the grass.³⁵
19:13 A foolish child³⁶ is the ruin of his father,³⁷
and a contentious wife³⁸ is like³⁹ a constant dripping.⁴⁰
19:14 A house and wealth are the inheritance from parents,⁴¹
but a prudent wife⁴² is from the LORD.
19:15 Laziness brings on⁴³ a deep sleep,⁴⁴
and the idle person⁴⁵ will go hungry.⁴⁶
19:16 The one who obeys commands guards⁴⁷ his life;
the one who despises his ways⁴⁸ shall die.⁴⁹
19:17 The one who is gracious⁵⁰ to the poor lends⁵¹ to the LORD,
and for his good deed⁵² He will repay him.⁵³
19:18 Discipline your child, for⁵⁴ there is hope;
but do not take it to heart⁵⁵ so that you cause his death.⁵⁶
19:19 A person with great anger bears the penalty;⁵⁷
but if you deliver him from it, you will have to do it again.⁵⁸
19:20 Listen to advice⁵⁹ and receive discipline
that⁶⁰ you may become wise⁶¹ in your latter end.⁶²
19:21 There are many plans⁶³ in a person’s heart,⁶⁴
but the counsel⁶⁵ of the LORD, it⁶⁶ shall stand.
19:22 The desire⁶⁷ of a person is his loyal love;
and better is a poor person than a liar.⁶⁸
19:23 The fear of the LORD leads⁶⁹ to life,⁷⁰
and he shall abide⁷¹ satisfied, he shall not be visited⁷² with evil.
19:24 The sluggard buries his hand in the dish;
and he will not even bring it back to his mouth!⁷³
19:25 When⁷⁴ you beat a scorner, the simpleton⁷⁵ will learn prudence;⁷⁶
and when you reprove a discerning person he will understand knowledge.⁷⁷
19:26 The one who robs⁷⁸ his father⁷⁹ and drives out his mother
is a son⁸⁰ who brings shame and disgrace.
19:27 Stop heeding⁸¹ discipline, my child,
and you will stray⁸² from the words of knowledge.
19:28 A crooked witness⁸³ scorns justice,
and the mouth of the wicked devours⁸⁴ iniquity.
19:29 Judgments⁸⁵ are prepared for scorners,
and beatings for the backs of fools.
