I did not tell you these things from the beginning because I was with you.10 16:5 But now I am going to the one who sent me,11 and not one of you is asking me, Where are you going?12 16:6 Instead your hearts are filled with sadness13 because I have said these things to you. 16:7 But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I am going away. For if I do not go away, the Advocate14 will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 16:8 And when he15 comes, he will prove the world wrong16 concerning sin and17 righteousness and18 judgment 16:9 concerning sin, because19 they do not believe in me;20 16:10 concerning righteousness,21 because22 I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; 16:11 and concerning judgment,23 because24 the ruler of this world25 has been condemned.26
16:12 I have many more things to say to you,27 but you cannot bear28 them now. 16:13 But when he,29 the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide30 you into all truth.31 For he will not speak on his own authority,32 but will speak whatever he hears, and will tell you33 what is to come.34 16:14 He35 will glorify me,36 because he will receive37 from me what is mine38 and will tell it to you.39 16:15 Everything that the Father has is mine; that is why I said the Spirit40 will receive from me what is mine41 and will tell it to you.42 16:16 In a little while you43 will see me no longer; again after a little while, you44 will see me.45
16:17 Then some of his disciples said to one another, What is the meaning of what he is saying,46 In a little while you47 will not see me; again after a little while, you48 will see me, and, because I am going to the Father?49 16:18 So they kept on repeating,50 What is the meaning of what he says,51 In a little while?52 We do not understand53 what he is talking about.54
16:19 Jesus could see55 that they wanted to ask him about these things,56 so57 he said to them, Are you asking58 each other about thisthat I said, In a little while you59 will not see me; again after a little while, you60 will see me? 16:20 I tell you the solemn truth,61 you will weep62 and wail,63 but the world will rejoice; you will be sad,64 but your sadness will turn into65 joy. 16:21 When a woman gives birth she has distress66 because her time67 has come, but when her child is born, she no longer remembers the suffering because of her joy that a human being68 has been born into the world.69 16:22 So also you have sorrow70 now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.71 16:23 At that time72 you will ask me nothing. I tell you the solemn truth,73 whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you.74 16:24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive it,75 so that your joy may be complete.
16:25 I have told you these things in obscure figures of speech;76 a time77 is coming when I will no longer speak to you in obscure figures, but will tell you78 plainly79 about the Father. 16:26 At that time80 you will ask in my name, and I do not say81 that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 16:27 For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.82 16:28 I came from the Father and entered into the world; but in turn,83 I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.84
16:29 His disciples said, Look, now you are speaking plainly85 and not in obscure figures of speech!86 16:30 Now we know that you know everything87 and do not need anyone88 to ask you anything.89 Because of this90 we believe that you have come from God.
16:31 Jesus replied,91 Do you now believe? 16:32 Look, a time92 is comingand has comewhen you will be scattered, each one to his own home,93 and I will be left alone.94 Yet95 I am not alone, because my Father is with me. 16:33 I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble and suffering;96 but have courage,97 I have conquered the world.98
