13:1 Just before the Passover feast, Jesus knew that his time1 had come to depart2 from this world to the Father. He had loved his own who were in the world, and now he loved them to the very end.3 13:2 The evening meal4 was in progress, and the devil had already put into the heart5 of Judas Iscariot,6 Simons son, that he should betray7 Jesus.8 13:3 Jesus, because he knew that the Father had handed things over to him,9 and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 13:4 got up from the meal, removed10 his outer clothes,11 took a towel and tied it around himself.12 13:5 He poured water into the washbasin and began to wash the disciples feet and to dry them with the towel he had wrapped around himself.13
13:6 Then he came to Simon Peter. Peter14 said to him, Lord, are you going to wash15 my feet? 13:7 Jesus replied,16 You do not understand17 what I am doing now, but you will understand18 after these things. 13:8 Peter said to him, You will never wash my feet!19 Jesus replied,20 If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.21 13:9 Simon Peter said to him, Lord, wash22 not only my feet, but also my hands and my head! 13:10 Jesus replied,23 The one who has bathed needs only to wash his feet,24 but is completely25 clean.26 And you disciples27 are clean, but not every one of you. 13:11 (For Jesus28 knew the one who was going to betray him. For this reason he said, Not every one of you is29 clean.)30
13:12 So when Jesus31 had washed their feet and put his outer clothing back on, he took his place at the table32 again and said to them, Do you understand33 what I have done for you? 13:13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and do so correctly,34 for that is what I am35. 13:14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you too ought to wash one anothers feet. 13:15 For I have given you an example:36 you should do just as I have done for you. 13:16 I tell you the solemn truth,37 the slave38 is not greater than his master, nor is the one who is sent as a messenger39 greater than the one who sent him. 13:17 If you understand40 these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
The Announcement of Jesus Betrayal13:18 What I am saying does not refer to all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture,41 The one who eats my bread42 has turned against me.43 13:19 I am telling you this now,44 before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe45 that I am he.46 13:20 I tell you the solemn truth,47 whoever accepts48 the one I send accepts49 me, and whoever accepts50 me accepts51 the one who sent me.52
13:21 When he had said these things, Jesus was greatly distressed53 in spirit and testified,54 I tell you the solemn truth,55 one of you will betray me.56 13:22 The disciples began to look at one another, worried and perplexed57 to know which of them he was talking about. 13:23 One of his disciples, the one Jesus loved,58 was at the table59 at Jesus right in the place of honor.60 13:24 So Simon Peter61 gestured to this disciple62 to ask Jesus63 who it was he was referring to.64 13:25 Then the disciple Jesus loved65 leaned back against Jesus chest and asked him, Lord, who is it? 13:26 Jesus replied,66 It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread67 after I have dipped it in the dish.68 Then he dipped the piece of bread in the dish69 and gave it to Judas Iscariot, Simons son. 13:27 And after Judas70 took the piece of bread Satan entered into him.71 Jesus said to him,72 What you are about to do, do quickly. 13:28 (Now none of those present at the table73 understood74 why Jesus75 said this to Judas.76 13:29 Some thought because Judas had the money box, that Jesus was telling him to buy whatever they needed for the feast,77 or to give something to the poor.)78 13:30 Judas79 took the piece of bread and went out immediately. (Now it was night.)80
The Prediction of Peters Denial13:31 When81 Judas82 had gone out, Jesus said, Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him. 13:32 If God is glorified in him,83 God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him right away.84 13:33 Children, I am still with you for a little while. You will look for me,85 and just as I said to the Jewish authorities,86 Where I am going you cannot come,87 now I tell you the same.88
13:34 I give you a new commandmentto love89 one another. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.90 13:35 Everyone91 will know by this that you are my disciplesif you have love for one another.
13:36 Simon Peter said to Jesus,92 Lord, where are you going? Jesus replied,93 Where I am going, you cannot follow me now; but you will follow later. 13:37 Peter said to him, Lord, why cant I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!94 13:38 Jesus answered, Will you lay down your life for me?95 I tell you the solemn truth,96 the rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times!
