Satan’s Additional Charge

2:1 Again the day came when the sons of God came to present themselves before Yahweh, and Satan also came among them to present himself before Yahweh.1 2:2 And Yahweh said to Satan, “From where do you come?” And Satan answered Yahweh and said, “From roving about in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.” 2:3 And Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, for there is no one like him on the earth, a pure and upright man, one who fears God and turns away from evil? And he still holds firmly2 his integrity,3 so that4 you stirred me up to destroy him5 without reason.”6

2:4 But7 Satan answered Yahweh and said, “Skin for8 skin!9 Indeed, all that a man has he will give10 for his life!

2:5 But stretch out your hand and strike his bone and his flesh,11 and he will indeed curse you to your face!”

2:6 So Yahweh said to Satan, “All right,12 he is13 in your power; only preserve14 his life.”

Job’s Integrity in Suffering

2:7 So Satan went out from the presence of Yahweh, and he afflicted15 Job with a malignant ulcer16 from the sole of his feet to his head.17 2:8 Job took a potsherd to scrape18 himself19 with while he was sitting20 in the midst of the ashes.21

2:9 Then22 his wife said to him, “Are you still holding firmly your integrity?23 Curse24 God, and die!”25 2:10 But he said to her, “You are speaking like one of the foolish26 women speaks! Should we receive27 that which is good from God, and should we not also28 receive29 that which is evil?”30 In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

The Visit of Job’s Friends31

2:11 When Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that had come upon him, each of them came from his own country:32 Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite.33 And they met together34 to come to show grief35 for him and to console36 him. 2:12 But when they lifted up their eyes37 from far off but could not recognize38 him, they lifted up their voices and wept; and each man tore his garments, and they sprinkled dust on their heads toward heaven. 2:13 Then they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights; and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his pain39 was very great.40
