2:1 Again the day came when the sons of God came to present themselves before Yahweh, and Satan also came among them to present himself before Yahweh.¹ 2:2 And Yahweh said to Satan, “From where do you come?” And Satan answered Yahweh and said, “From roving about in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.” 2:3 And Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, for there is no one like him on the earth, a pure and upright man, one who fears God and turns away from evil? And he still holds firmly² his integrity,³ so that⁴ you stirred me up to destroy him⁵ without reason.”⁶

2:4 But⁷ Satan answered Yahweh and said, “Skin for⁸ skin!⁹ Indeed, all that a man has he will give¹⁰ for his life!

2:5 But stretch out your hand and strike his bone and his flesh,¹¹ and he will indeed curse you to your face!”

2:6 So Yahweh said to Satan, “All right,¹² he is¹³ in your power; only preserve¹⁴ his life.”

2:7 So Satan went out from the presence of Yahweh, and he afflicted¹⁵ Job with a malignant ulcer¹⁶ from the sole of his feet to his head.¹⁷ 2:8 Job took a potsherd to scrape¹⁸ himself¹⁹ with while he was sitting²⁰ in the midst of the ashes.²¹

2:9 Then²² his wife said to him, “Are you still holding firmly your integrity?²³ Curse²⁴ God, and die!”²⁵ 2:10 But he said to her, “You are speaking like one of the foolish²⁶ women speaks! Should we receive²⁷ that which is good from God, and should we not also²⁸ receive²⁹ that which is evil?”³⁰ In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

2:11 When Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that had come upon him, each of them came from his own country:³² Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite.³³ And they met together³⁴ to come to show grief³⁵ for him and to console³⁶ him. 2:12 But when they lifted up their eyes³⁷ from far off but could not recognize³⁸ him, they lifted up their voices and wept; and each man tore his garments, and they sprinkled dust on their heads toward heaven. 2:13 Then they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights; and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his pain³⁹ was very great.⁴⁰
