50:1 Then Joseph fell on his fathers face,1 and wept over him, and kissed him. 50:2 And Joseph instructed his servants the physicians to embalm his father, so the physicians embalmed Israel. 50:3 And forty days were fulfilled for him, for that is the full time for embalming.2 And the Egyptians wept3 for him seventy days.
50:4 When the days of mourning4 had passed,5 Joseph spoke to the house of Pharaoh,6 saying, If I have found favor in your sight, please speak to Pharaoh,7 saying, 50:5 `My father made me swear, saying, I am about to die. Bury me8 in my grave that I dug for myself there in the land of Canaan. Now let me go up that I may bury9 my father, and I will return.10
50:6 And Pharaoh said, Go up and bury your dead, just as he made you swear.
50:7 So Joseph went up to bury his father, and all the servants of Pharaoh went with him, the elders of his household and all the elders of the land of Egypt, 50:8 and all the household of Joseph and his brothers and the household of his father; only their little ones and their flocks and their herds did they leave in the land of Goshen. 50:9 And chariots and horsemen also went up with him. So it was a very great company.11
50:10 When they came12 to the threshing floor of Atad, which was on the other side of the Jordan,13 they lamented there with a very great and bitter lamentation.14 And there Joseph made a seven day period of mourning for his father. 50:11 When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning,15 at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning for the Egyptians. That is why its name was called16 Abel Mizraim,17 which is beyond the Jordan.
50:12 So the sons of Jacob did for him just as he had instructed them. 50:13 His sons18 carried him to the land of Canaan, and they buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, near Mamre, which field Abraham had purchased for a possession of a burying place from Ephron the Hittite. 50:14 And after he buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.
50:15 When the brothers of Joseph saw19 that their father was dead, they said, What if Joseph bears a grudge, and wants to repay20 us in full21 for all the evil that we dealt him? 50:16 So they sent word22 to Joseph, saying, Your father gave these instructions before he died, saying, 50:17 `Thus you will say to Joseph: Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sins when they treated you so badly. So now please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father. And Joseph wept when they sent word23 to him.
50:18 Then his brothers also came and fell down before him; and they said, Here, we are your slaves.
50:19 But Joseph said to them, Do not be afraid. Am24 I in the place of God? 50:20 But as for you, you meant25 evil against me, God intended it for good,26 in order to do, as it is this day, the preserving alive27 of many people. 50:21 So now, Do not be afraid, I will provide28 for you and your little ones. Then he comforted them and spoke kindly29 to them.
50:22 And Joseph lived in Egypt, he and the house of his father; and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years. 50:23 And Joseph saw the children of Ephraim of the third generation;30 and also the children of Makir the son of Manasseh were born on the knees of Joseph.31
50:24 Then Joseph said to his brothers, I am about to die, But God will surely visit,32 and take you up33 from this land to the land that he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. 50:25 And Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, God will surely visit you; then you must carry34 my bones up from this place. 50:26 So Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten.35
And after they embalmed him,36 he was placed in a coffin in Egypt.
