39:1 Now Joseph had been brought down to Egypt;1 and Potiphar, an official of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian man, bought him from2 the Ishmaelites who brought him there. 39:2 And the LORD was with Joseph and he was prosperous;3 and he lived4 in the household of his Egyptian master. 39:3 And his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD made everything that he was doing successful.5 39:4 So Joseph found favor in his sight and became his servant;6 and Potiphar appointed7 him over his household, and all that he had he put in his care.8 39:5 From the time9 he appointed him over his household and over everything that he had,10 the LORD blessed11 the household of the Egyptian on account of Joseph. And the blessing of the LORD was on everything that he had, both12 in the house and in the field.13 39:6 So he left14 everything he had in the care15 of Joseph; and he did not take charge16 of anything except the food he ate.17
Joseph was very handsome, a fine figure of a man.18 39:7 And soon after these things the wife of his master cast her eyes19 on Joseph, and she said, Lie with me.20
39:8 But he refused, saying21 to his masters wife, Look, my master does not take charge22 of his household with me here,23 and everything that he has he has put into my care.24 39:9 There is no one greater in this household than I, and he has withheld nothing from meexcept you, because you are his wife. So how can I do25 this great evil and sin against God? 39:10 And even though she spoke26 to Joseph day after day, he did not respond27 to her to lie beside her or to be with her.
39:11 And it happened about this time that he went in to the house to do his work, when there were none of the men of the household there in the house, 39:12 and she caught him by his cloak, saying, Lie with me! But he left his cloak in her hand and fled28 outside.29 39:13 And when she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had fled outside, 39:14 she called for the men of her household, and she spoke to them, saying, See, he brought30 in a Hebrew man31 to us to mock us.32 He came in to lie with me, but I cried out. 39:15 And when he heard me raise33 my voice and cry out, then he left his cloak beside me and fled outside.
39:16 So she laid his cloak beside her until his master came in to the house. 39:17 Then she spoke to him after this manner,34 saying, The Hebrew slave35 whom you brought to us came in to me to mock me,36 39:18 but when I raised my voice and cried out, he left his cloak and fled outside.
39:19 And when his master heard the words of his wife that she spoke to him, saying, After this manner37 your slave treated me,38 his angered was kindled. 39:20 And Josephs master took him and put him into the prison,39 the place where the kings prisoners were bound. So he was there in the prison.40
39:21 But the LORD was with Joseph, and he extended loving kindness to him, and gave him favor in the eyes of the keeper of the prison. 39:22 And the keeper of the prison put all the prisoners that were in the prison into the care of Joseph; and whatever was being done there he was the one doing it.41 39:23 The keeper of the prison did not concern himself42 with anything that was in his care, because the LORD was with him, and whatever he was doing the LORD was making successful.
