35:1 Then God said to Jacob, Go up at once1 to Bethel and live there, and make an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you fled from before Esau your brother.2
35:2 So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, Remove the foreign gods that are in your midst;3 and purify yourselves and change your clothes.4 35:3 And let us go up at once5 to Bethel, and I will make an altar there to God who answered me in the day of my distress6 and has been with me in the way that I have gone.7
35:4 Then they gave to Jacob all the foreign gods that were in their possession8 and the rings that were in their ears; and Jacob buried them under the oak that is in Shechem.9 35:5 So they started their journey,10 and the terror of God11 was on the cities that were all around them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.
35:6 And Jacob came to Luz which was in the land of Canaan, that is Bethel, he and all the people who were with him. 35:7 And he built there an altar, and he called the place El Bethel,12
because it was there that God revealed himself13 to him when he was fleeing from his brother.
35:8 And Deborah,14 Rebekahs nurse, died and was buried below Bethel under the oak; and its name was called15 Allon Bacuth.16
35:9 And God appeared to Jacob again after he returned from Paddan Aram, and blessed him. 35:10 And God said to him, Your name is Jacob; your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel will be your name. So he called his name Israel.
35:11 Then God said to him, I am God Almighty.17 Be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations will come from you, and kings will come from you.18 35:12 And the land which I gave19 to Abraham and to Isaac I will give to you, and to your descendants20 after you I will give this land. 35:13 Then God went up from him in the place where he spoke with him.
35:14 So Jacob set up a pillar21 in the place where he spoke with him, a pillar of stone; he poured out22 a drink offering on it, and then he poured oil on it.23 35:15 And Jacob called the name of the place24 where God spoke with him Bethel.
35:16 And they traveled from Bethel; and when there was still a stretch of land to go to Ephrath, Rachel was in childbirth25 and her labor was hard. 35:17 And when her labor was at its hardest,26 the midwife said to her, Do not be afraid, for this is another son for you.27 35:18 And as she was departing this life,28 for she was dying, she called his name Ben-Oni.29 But his father called him Benjamin.30 35:19 So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrat, which is Bethlehem. 35:20 And Jacob set up a pillar31 over her grave; it is the Pillar of Rachels Grave to this day.
35:21 Then Israel traveled farther32 and pitched his tent beyond Migdal Eder.33 35:22 And while Israel was living in that land, Reuben went in and lay with34 Bilhah, his fathers concubine; and Israel heard about it.
These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan Aram.
35:27 So Jacob came to Isaac his father in Mamre,36 to Kiriath Arba,37 which is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.38 35:28 And the lifetime39 of Isaac was a hundred and eighty years. 35:29 And when Isaac breathed his last40 he died and was gathered to his people, old and full41 of years. And Esau and Jacob his sons buried him.
