Jacob Cheats Esau out of the Blessing

27:1 When1 Isaac was old and his eyes were weak so that he could not see,2 he called Esau his older3 son and said to him, “My son.” And Esau4 said, “Here I am.” 27:2 He said,5 “Since6 I am old I do not know the day of my death. 27:3 Now then, take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and catch7 some wild game8 for me. 27:4 Then prepare for me some savory food, the kind I love, and bring it to me that9 I may eat, so that I may truly10 bless you before I die.”

27:5 Now Rebekah had been listening in as Isaac spoke to Esau his son.11 When12 Esau went out to the field to hunt wild game to bring it back, 27:6 Rebekah13 said to Jacob her son,14 “Look, I heard your father speaking to Esau your brother, saying, 27:7 `Bring me wild game and prepare for me some savory food that I may eat15 and that I may bless you16 in the presence of the LORD17 before I die.’ 27:8 And now, my son, obey me18 in everything that I command you: 27:9 go to the flock and get me from there two choice kids of the goats, and I will make them into savory food for your father just the way he loves it. 27:10 Then you will take19 it to your father and he will eat,20 so that he may bless you before he dies.”

27:11 But Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “But Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a man with smooth skin. 27:12 What if my father feels me—I would appear21 in his sight as a deceiver, and I would bring22 down a curse on my head and not a blessing.” 27:13 So his mother said to him, “Let your curse be on me,23 my son! Only obey me, and go and get them for me.”

27:14 So he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and his mother prepared some savory food just the way he loved it. 27:15 Then Rebekah took the best clothes of Esau her oldest son, which were with her in the house, and she put them on24 Jacob her youngest son; 27:16 and she put25 the skins of the kids of the goats on his hands26 and the smooth parts of his neck. 27:17 Then she put the savory food and the bread that she had made into the hands of Jacob her son.

27:18 And he went in to his father, and said, “My father.” And he said, “Here I am—who are you, my son?”27 27:19 And Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn; I have done as you

told me. Now sit up28 and eat some of my wild game, so that you may truly bless me.”29 27:20 But Isaac said to his son, “How is it30 that you have found it so quickly,31 my son?” And he said, “Because the LORD your God brought it to me.”32 27:21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Draw near so that I may feel you, my son, to see33 whether you are indeed my son Esau or not.” 27:22 So Jacob drew near to Isaac his father, and he felt him; and he said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 27:23 He did not34 recognize him because his hands were hairy like the hands of Esau his brother; so he blessed him. 27:24 And he said, “Are you indeed my son Esau?” And he said, “I am.” 27:25 Then he said, “Bring me some of the wild game that35 I may eat, my son, so that I may truly36 bless you.” So he brought it to him and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank. 27:26 Then Isaac his father said to him, “Draw near and kiss me my son.” 27:27 So he drew near and kissed him. And when Isaac smelled37 the smell of his clothing, he blessed him, and said,

27:30 After46 Isaac had finished blessing47 Jacob, and Jacob had scarcely gone out48 from before Isaac his father, then Esau his brother came in from his hunt. 27:31 And he also made savory food and brought it to his father; and he said to his father, “Let my father get up49 and eat some of his son’s wild game, so that you may truly bless me.”50

27:32 And Isaac his father asked,51 “Who are you?” And he said, “I am your son, your firstborn Esau.

27:33 And Isaac trembled very greatly52 and said, “Who is it then who hunted game and brought it to me, so that I ate of all before you came in and blessed him?—and indeed he will be blessed!”

27:34 When Esau heard53 the words of his father he cried out with an exceedingly loud and bitter cry;54 and he said to his father, “Bless me, me also, my father.”

27:35 But he said, “Your brother came in deceitfully55 and took away56 your blessing.” 27:36 And he said, “Is he not rightly named Jacob? He has tripped me up57 these two times: he took my birthright, and now he has taken my blessing!” And he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”

27:37 And Isaac answered and said to Esau, “Since58 I have made him lord over you and have made all his relatives his servants, and sustained him with grain and new wine, what can I then do for you, my son?” 27:38 And Esau said to his father, “Do you only have one blessing, my father? Bless me, also me, my father!” And Esau lifted up his voice59 and wept.

27:41 So Esau hated62 Jacob over the blessing with which his father had blessed him. And Esau said in his heart,63 “The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will slay64 Jacob my brother.”

27:42 When65 Rebekah was told the words of Esau her oldest son, she urgently sent for66 Jacob her youngest son; and she said to him, “Look, your brother Esau is consoling himself about you to slay you.67 27:43 Now then, my son, obey me: flee immediately68 to my brother Laban in Haran. 27:44 Live69 with him for a little while70 until your brother’s fury subsides, 27:45 until your brother’s anger against you subsides and forgets what you did to him; and then I will send71 to fetch you72 from there. Why should I be bereaved73 of the two of you in one day?”

27:46 Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I loathe74 my life because of these daughters of Heth. If Jacob takes a wife from the daughters of Heth like these, from the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?”75
