The Death of Abraham

25:1 Abraham1 took another2 wife; and her name was Keturah. 25:2 And she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. 25:3 And Jokshan became the father of Sheba and Dedan;3 and the sons of Dedan were the Asshurites, the Letushites, and the Leummites. 25:4 And the sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were sons4 of Keturah.

25:5 And Abraham gave everything that belonged to him to Isaac. 25:6 But while he was still living Abraham gave gifts to the sons of the concubines that he had5 and sent them away from Isaac his son eastward, to the land of the east.

25:7 And this is the length of the lifetime that Abraham lived:6 a hundred and seventy-five years. 25:8 Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age, an old man full of years;7 and he was gathered to his people.8 25:9 And Isaac and Ishmael his sons buried him in the cave of Machpelah which is near Mamre, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar, the Hittite,

25:10 the field that Abraham had acquired from the sons of Heth. There Abraham was buried with Sarah his wife. 25:11 And9 after the death of Abraham, God blessed10 Isaac his son. Isaac then11 lived by Beer Lahai Roi.

The Sons of Ishmael

25:12 This is the account of Ishmael,12 the son of Abraham, whom Hagar the Egyptian, the maidservant of Sarah, bore to Abraham.

25:13 These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names according to their records:13 the firstborn of Ishmael was Nebaioth, and Kedar, and Abdeel, and Mibsam, 25:14 and Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa, 25:15 Hadad, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. 25:16 These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names by their settlements and their camps—twelve princes according to their clans.

25:17 Now these are the years of the lifetime of Ishmael: a hundred and thirty seven years. He breathed14 his last and died; and he was gathered to his people. 25:18 And his descendants15 settled from Havilah to Shur, which runs next16 to Egypt all the way17 to Asshur.18 They settled19 over against all their20 brethren.21

Jacob and Esau

25:19 This is the account of Isaac,22 the son of Abraham.

Abraham became the father of Isaac, 25:20 and Isaac was forty years old23 when he took for his wife Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan Aram and sister of Laban the Aramean.24

25:21 And Isaac entreated25 the LORD on behalf of his wife because she was barren; and the LORD was entreated by him,26 and Rebekah his wife became pregnant.27 25:22 But the children pushed roughly28 inside her, and she said, “If it is like this, why am I here?”29 So she went to inquire of the LORD.30 25:23 And the LORD said to her,

25:24 And when her days were fulfilled that she should give birth,32 there were33 twins in her womb. 25:25 And the first came out reddish,34 all over,35 like a hairy36 garment; and he called his name Esau.37 25:26 And after this his brother came out with38 his hand grasping the heel39 of Esau; so he called his name Jacob.40 And Isaac was sixty years old41 when they were born.

25:27 When42 the boys grew up, Esau became a cunning43 hunter, a man of the field, but Jacob was an even-tempered man, living in tents.44 25:28 Now45 Isaac loved Esau because he had a taste for what was hunted;46 but Rebekah loved47 Jacob.

25:29 Now Jacob cooked some stew;48 and Esau came in from the field, and he was famished. 25:30 So Esau said to Jacob, “Feed49 me some of the red stuff—the red stuff, because I am famished.” That is why his name was called50 Edom.51

25:31 But Jacob said, “First52 sell me your birthright.” 25:32 And Esau said, “Look, I am going to die; what is the birthright to me?”53 25:33 And Jacob said, “Swear to me now.”54 And so he swore to him; and he sold his birthright to Jacob.55

25:34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate, and drank, and arose, and went out.56

So Esau57 despised his birthright.
