22:1After these things1 God tested2 Abraham: he said3 to him, Abraham! And he replied,4 Here I am. 22:2 And he5 said, Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, even Isaac,6 and go to7 the land of Moriah8 and offer him there for a burnt offering9 on one of the mountains which I will tell10 you.
22:3 So early in the morning11 Abraham saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son. When12 he had cut the wood for the burnt offering, he started out13 for the place about which God had spoken.
22:4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes14 and saw the place far off. 22:5 And Abraham said to his servants, Remain here15 with the donkey, and I and the lad will go up16 there and will worship17 and will return to you.
22:6 Then Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and put it on Isaac his son, and he took the fire and the knife in his hand;18 and the two of them went on together. 22:7 Then Isaac said to Abraham his father,19 My father. And he replied,20 What is it,21 my son? And he said, Here is the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering? 22:8 And Abraham said, God will provide22 for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son. And so the two of them went on together.
22:9 When they came to the place23 that God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there24 and arranged the wood. Then he bound25 Isaac his son, and placed him on the altar on the wood. 22:10 Abraham26 stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 22:11 But the Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven, and said, Abraham! Abraham! And he said, Here I am! 22:12 And he said, Do not lay your hand on the lad; do27 not do anything to him; for now I know that you fear28 God, because you did not withhold your son, your only son, from me.
22:13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and sawand there29 was a ram behind him, caught in the thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. 22:14 Abraham30 called the name of that place Yahweh Yireh;31 as it is said to this day,32 In the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.33
22:15 And the Angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven 22:16 and said, I swear by myself, says34 the LORD, that because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your beloved son, 22:17 I will surely bless you35 and I will greatly multiply36 your descendants37 like the stars in the heavens, or like the sand on the sea shore.38 And your descendants39 will take possession40 of the gate41 of their enemies. 22:18 All the nations42 of the earth will be blessed43 through your descendants44 because you have obeyed me.45
22:19 Then Abraham returned to his young men, and they started out together46 for Beersheba. And Abraham lived in Beersheba.
22:20 And47 after these things it was told to Abraham, saying, Milcah48 has also given birth to children to Nahor your brother: 22:21 Uz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel, (the father of Aram), 22:22 and Kesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph and Bethuel. 22:23 Now Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. These eight sons Milcah bore to Nahor the brother of Abraham. 22:24 And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, also gave birth: Tebah, and Gaham, and Tahash, and Maacah.
