17:1 When1 Abram was ninety-nine years old,2 the LORD appeared3 to Abram and said to him, I am El Shadday;4 walk5 before me and be blameless.6 17:2 And I will confirm my covenant7 between me and you, and I will multiply you exceedingly.8
17:3 And Abram fell on his face;9 and God spoke to him, saying, 17:4 As for me,10 this11 is my covenant with you: you will be the father of a multitude of nations. 17:5 No12 longer will your name be called Abram, but your name will be Abraham, because I have made you13 a father of a multitude of nations.14 17:6 I will make you15 exceedingly16 fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings will come from you. 17:7 And I will carry out17 my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants18 after you throughout their generations, to be your God and your descendants God19 after you. 17:8 And I will give the whole land of Canaan, the land were you are residing,20 to you and to your descendants after you as an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.
17:9 Then God said to Abraham, And as for you, you must keep21 my covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations. 17:10 This is my covenant between me and you and your descendants after you which you must keep: every male among you must be circumcised.22 17:11 You must be23 circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin; and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you. 17:12 Throughout your generations every male among you who is eight days old24 must be circumcised, the one who is born in your house, or bought with money from any foreigner, who is not one of your descendants. 17:13 They must indeed be circumcised,25 whether born in your house or bought with money. And my covenant will be in your flesh as an everlasting covenant. 17:14 And as for26 any uncircumcised male who has not been circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that individual27 will be cut off28 from his peoplehe has broken29 my covenant.
17:15 And God said to Abraham, As for30 Sarai your wife, you will not call her Sarai; but Sarah31 will be her name. 17:16 And I will bless her, and I will also give you a son from her. I will bless her so that32 she will become a mother33 of nations: kings of peoples will come from her!
17:17 Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed;34 and he said in his heart,35 Can36 a son be born to one who is a hundred years old?37 or Sarah,38 can she bear a child at the age of ninety?39 17:18 And Abraham said to God, O that Ishmael might live before you.40
17:19 And God said, But Sarah your wife will bear41 you a son, and you will call his name Isaac.42 And I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. 17:20 But as for Ishmael, I have heard you:43 indeed, I will bless him, and I will make him fruitful, and I will multiply him exceedingly.44 He will become the father of twelve princes;45 and I will make him into a great nation. 17:21 But my covenant I will establish with Isaac whom Sarah will bear for you at this set time next year. 17:22 When he finished speaking46 with him, God went up from Abraham.47
17:23 And Abram took his son Ishmael and all those born in his house and all those bought with money, every male in the household of Abraham, and he circumcised the foreskin of their flesh on that very same day, just as God had said to him. 17:24 Now Abraham was ninety nine years old48 when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, 17:25 and Ishmael his son was thirteen years old49 when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin; 17:26 Abraham and Ishmael his son were circumcised on the very same day. 17:27 And all the men of his household, either born in his household or bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him.
