The Temptation and the Fall

3:1 Now1 the serpent2 was more shrewd3 than any of the animals of the field which the LORD God had made. He said4 to the woman, “Is it indeed true that5 God6 said, ‘You must not eat from every tree of the garden’?” 3:2 And the woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat;7 3:3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden God said, ‘You must not eat from it, nor must you touch it,8 lest you die’.”9 3:4 The serpent said10 to the woman, “You will not surely die,11 3:5 for God knows12 that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened13 and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”14

3:6 When15 the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant16 to the eye, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise,17 she took some of its fruit and ate;18 and she also gave some of it to her husband who was with her, and he ate.19 3:7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

The Oracles of God at the Fall

3:8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God moving about20 in the garden at the breezy time21 of the day, and they hid22 from the LORD God in the midst of the trees of the garden. 3:9 But the LORD God called to23 the man and said to him, “Where are you?”24 3:10 And he said, “I heard your sound in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” 3:11 And the LORD God25 said, “Who told you that you were naked?26 Did you eat from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”27 3:12 The man said,28 “The woman whom you gave to me—she gave29 to me from the tree and I ate!” 3:13 So the LORD God said30 to the woman, “What is this31 you have done?” And the woman said, “The serpent32 beguiled me, and I ate.”

3:21 The LORD God made61 garments from skin62 for Adam and his wife, and he clothed them. 3:22 And the LORD God said, “Now63 that the man has become like one of us, knowing64 good and evil, he must not be allowed65 to stretch out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat and live forever.” 3:23 So the LORD God expelled him66 from the garden in Eden, to work the ground from which he had been taken. 3:24 When he drove67 the man out, he placed on the eastern side of the garden in Eden the Cherubim68 with a flame of the sword flashing this way and that,69 to guard the way to the tree of life.
