3:1 And he said to me, Son of man, eat what you find, eat this scroll and go, speak to the house of Israel. 3:2 I opened my mouth and he fed me this scroll. 3:3 He said to me, son of man, your stomach you will feed, and your belly you will fill with this scroll which I am giving to you. I ate1 and it was sweet as honey2 in my mouth. 3:4 He said to me, son of man, go to the house of Israel and speak my words to them. 3:5 For not to a people of obscure speech3 and heavy tongue4 you are sent but5 to the house of Israel; 3:6 not to many peoples of obscure speech and heavy tongue, whose words you cannot understand6—surely if7 I had sent you to them, they would listen to you. 3:7 But the house of Israel will not be willing to listen to you8 for they are not willing to listen to me;9 for all the house of Israel is hard headed and have a hardened heart.

3:8 I have set your face sternly10 against their face, and your forehead sternly against their forehead. 3:9 As diamond,11 I have set your face harder than flint. You will not fear them, you will not be dismayed by their looks,12 for they are a rebellious house.

3:10 And he said to me: Son of man, all my words which I speak to you take to heart and hear with your ears. 3:11 Go to the exiles, to the sons of your people, and you will speak to them, and you will say to them, “Thus says the Lord GOD”; whether they hear or not.

Ezekiel Before the Exiles

3:12 The Spirit lifted me13 and I heard after me a great quaking sound— “Blessed be the glory of the LORD14 from his place!”— 3:13 the sound of the living beings touching each other, and the sound of the wheels against them, a sound of a great quaking. 3:14 The Spirit lifted me up and took me, and I went bitterly, my spirit full of wrath, and the hand of the LORD was mighty upon me. 3:15 I came to the exiles at Tel Aviv,15 to the ones dwelling by the Chebar River. And there where they were living I sat for seven days appalled in their midst.16 3:16 At the end of seven days the word of the LORD came to me saying:17 3:17 Son of man, I have placed you as a watchman18 for the house of Israel, and you will hear a word from my mouth and you will give them a warning from me. 3:18 When I say to the wicked one, “You will certainly die,” and you do not warn him—you do not speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way that he might live, the wicked will die in his iniquity and his blood I will seek from your hand.19 3:19 But if you warn the wicked and he does not turn from his wickedness and from his wicked way, he will die in his iniquity but you will have saved your life.20 3:20 When a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits a perversion, I will place a stumbling block21 before him—he will die. Because you did not warn him when he sinned, he will die, and his righteous acts which he performed will not be remembered, but his blood I will request from your hand. 3:21 But if you warn the righteous not to sin, and the righteous one does not sin, he will certainly live because he was warned, and you will have saved your life.

Isolation and Silenced

3:22 And the hand of the LORD came upon me there, and He said to me: Rise, go to the valley22 and I will speak with you there. 3:23 Then I arose and I went out to the valley and there the glory of the LORD was standing just like the glory I saw by the Chebar River; and I fell on my face. 3:24 Then the Spirit came into me and stood me on my feet. He spoke with me and said to me: Go close yourself in your house. 3:25 And as for you, son of man, they will place ropes on you and tie you with them. And you will not go out in their presence. 3:26 I will make your tongue cling to your palate and you will be dumb,23 and you will not be a reprover24 for them, because they are a rebellious house. 3:27 But when I speak to you25 I will open your mouth and you will say to them, “Thus says the Lord GOD”; the one who hears will hear but the one who does not will not; for they are a rebellious house.
