34:1 And Yahweh said to Moses, “Cut out¹ two tablets of stone like the first, and I will write² on the tablets the words which were on the first tablets which you smashed. 34:2 And be prepared³ in the morning, and go up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and station yourself⁴ for me there on the top of the mountain. 34:3 And no man will come up with you, neither let any man be seen throughout the mountain, neither let the flocks or the herds feed graze before that mountain.” 34:4 So he cut out two tablets of stone like the first;⁵ and early in the morning Moses went up⁶ to Mount Sinai, just as Yahweh had commanded him; and he took in his hand two tablets of stone.

34:5 And Yahweh descended in the cloud and stood with him there; and he made proclamation of Yahweh by name.⁷ 34:6 And Yahweh passed by before him and proclaimed:⁸ “Yahweh, Yahweh,⁹ the compassionate and gracious¹⁰ God, slow to anger,¹¹ and abounding in loyal love and faithfulness,¹² 34:7 keeping loyal love for thousands,¹³ forgiving iniquity, and transgression and sin. But he by no means leaves the guilty unpunished; visiting the iniquity¹⁴ of the fathers on the children and on the children’s children, to the third and fourth generation.”

34:8 And Moses quickly bowed¹⁵ to the ground, and worshiped. 34:9 And he said, “If now I have found favor in your sight, O Lord, let my Lord go in our midst, for it is a stiff necked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance.”

34:10 And he said, “I am going to make¹⁶ a covenant; before all your people I will do wonders such as have not been done¹⁷ in all the earth, nor in any nation. And all the people among whom you are will see the work of Yahweh, for it is a fearful thing that I am doing with you.¹⁸

34:11 Keep¹⁹ that which I am commanding you this day. I am going to drive out²⁰ before you the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite. 34:12 Be careful that you do not make²¹ a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, where you are going, lest it should become a snare²² in your midst. 34:13 But you will destroy their altars, you will smash their images, and you will cut down their Asherah poles.²³ 34:14 For you will not worship²⁴ any other god,²⁵ for Yahweh, whose name²⁶ is Jealous, is a jealous God. 34:15 Be careful²⁷ not to make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, for when²⁸ they prostitute themselves²⁹ to their gods and sacrifice to their gods, then you will be invited,³⁰ and you will eat from his sacrifice; 34:16 and you take³¹ from their daughters for your sons, and their daughters prostitute themselves to their gods, and they make your sons prostitute themselves to their gods. 34:17 You will not make molten gods for you.

34:18 You will keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread. For seven days³² you will eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you; do this³³ at the appointed time of the month Abib, for in the month Abib you came out of Egypt.

34:19 Every firstborn³⁴ of the womb belongs to me, even every firstborn³⁵ of your cattle that is a male,³⁶ ox or sheep. 34:20 Now the firstling³⁷ of a donkey you may redeem with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, then break its neck.³⁸ You will redeem all the firstborn of your sons.

No one will appear before me empty handed.³⁹

34:21 On six days⁴⁰ you will labor, but on the seventh day you will rest;⁴¹ in the plowing time and in the harvest⁴² you are to rest.⁴³

34:22 And you will observe⁴⁴ the feast of weeks, the first fruits of the harvest of wheat, and the feast of ingathering at the end⁴⁵ of the year. 34:23 At three times⁴⁶ in the year all your men⁴⁷ will appear before the Lord⁴⁸ Yahweh, the God of Israel. 34:24 For I will drive out⁴⁹ the nations before you, and enlarge your borders; and no man will covet⁵⁰ your land when you go up⁵¹ to appear before Yahweh your God three times⁵² in the year.

34:25 You will not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven; neither will the sacrifice from the feast of Passover remain until the morning.⁵³

34:26 The first of the first fruits of your land you will bring to the house of Yahweh your God.

You will not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.”⁵⁴

34:27 And Yahweh said to Moses, “Write⁵⁵ these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” 34:28 So he was there with Yahweh forty days and forty nights;⁵⁶ he did not eat bread, and he did not drink water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten words.

34:29 Now when Moses came down⁵⁸ from Mount Sinai with⁵⁹ the two tablets of the testimony in his hand⁶⁰ when he came down⁶¹ from the mountain, Moses⁶² did not know that the skin of his face shone⁶³ while he talked with him. 34:30 When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses—the skin of his face shone;⁶⁴ and they were afraid to approach him. 34:31 But Moses called to them, so Aaron and all the leaders of the community came back to him. Then Moses spoke to them. 34:32 And after this all the Israelites drew near; and he commanded them all that Yahweh had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. 34:33 When Moses finished⁶⁵ speaking⁶⁶ with them, he would⁶⁷ put a veil on his face. 34:34 But when Moses went in⁶⁸ before Yahweh to speak with him, he would remove the veil until he came out.⁶⁹ Then he would come out and tell the Israelites that which he had been commanded.⁷⁰ 34:35 When the Israelites would see⁷¹ the face of Moses, that⁷² the skin of Moses’ face shone, Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in⁷³ to speak with him.
