20:1 And God spoke all these words, saying,¹

20:2 I,² Yahweh, am your God,³ who brought you⁴ from the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.⁵

20:3 You will have no⁶ other gods before me.⁷

20:4 You will not make for yourself a graven image⁸ or any likeness⁹ of anything¹⁰ that is in heaven above, or that is on earth under it, or that is in the water below.¹¹ 20:5 You will not bow down to them nor serve them,¹² for I, Yahweh, your God, am a jealous¹³ God, visiting¹⁴ the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations to those who hate me,¹⁵ 20:6 but showing faithful love¹⁶ to thousands¹⁷ belonging to those who love me and to those who keep my commandments.

20:7 You will not take¹⁸ the name of Yahweh your God in vain,¹⁹ for Yahweh will not hold guiltless²⁰ whoever takes his name in vain.

20:8 Remember²¹ the sabbath²² day to sanctify it.²³ 20:9 For six days²⁴ you may labor²⁵ and do all your work,²⁶ 20:10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to Yahweh your God; on it²⁷ you will not do any work, you,²⁸ or your son, or your daughter, or your servant, or your maidservant, or your cattle, or your foreigner who is in your gates.²⁹ 20:11 For in six days Yahweh made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, and he rested on the seventh day; therefore Yahweh blessed the sabbath day and sanctified it.

20:12 Honor³⁰ your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land³¹ which Yahweh your God is giving to you.

20:13 You will not kill.³²

20:14 You will not commit adultery.³³

20:15 You will not steal.³⁴

20:16 You will not give³⁵ false testimony³⁶ against your neighbor.

20:17 You will not covet³⁷ your neighbor’s house. You will not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his servant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that belongs to your neighbor.³⁸

20:18 And all the people were seeing³⁹ the thunderings and the lightning, and heard ⁴⁰the sound of the horn, and the mountain smoking—and when⁴¹ they people saw it they trembled with fear⁴² and kept their distance.⁴³ 20:19 And they said to Moses, “You speak⁴⁴ to us and we will listen, but do not let God speak with us lest we die.” 20:20 And Moses said to the people, “Do not fear, for God has come to prove you,⁴⁵ that the fear of him⁴⁶ may be before in order that you do not⁴⁷ sin.” 20:21 The people kept⁴⁸ their distance, but Moses drew near the thick darkness⁴⁹ where God was.⁵⁰

20:22 Yahweh said⁵² to Moses, “Thus you will say to the Israelites: ‘You yourselves have seen that I have spoken with you from heaven. 20:23 You will not make with me⁵³ gods of silver, neither will you make for you gods of gold.⁵⁴

20:24 An altar made of earth⁵⁵ you will make for me, and you will sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings,⁵⁶ your sheep and your cattle, in every place⁵⁷ where I cause my name to be honored⁵⁸ I will come to you and I will bless you. 20:25 And if you make me an altar of stone, you will not build it⁵⁹ of hewn stone,⁶⁰ for if you use your tool for it you will have defiled it.⁶¹ 20:26 And you will not go up by steps to my altar, so that your nakedness be not exposed.’⁶²
