The Decalogue43

20:1 And God spoke all these words, saying,1

20:2 I,2 Yahweh, am your God,3 who brought you4 from the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.5

20:3 You will have no6 other gods before me.7

20:4 You will not make for yourself a graven image8 or any likeness9 of anything10 that is in heaven above, or that is on earth under it, or that is in the water below.11 20:5 You will not bow down to them nor serve them,12 for I, Yahweh, your God, am a jealous13 God, visiting14 the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations to those who hate me,15 20:6 but showing faithful love16 to thousands17 belonging to those who love me and to those who keep my commandments.

20:7 You will not take18 the name of Yahweh your God in vain,19 for Yahweh will not hold guiltless20 whoever takes his name in vain.

20:8 Remember21 the sabbath22 day to sanctify it.23 20:9 For six days24 you may labor25 and do all your work,26 20:10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to Yahweh your God; on it27 you will not do any work, you,28 or your son, or your daughter, or your servant, or your maidservant, or your cattle, or your foreigner who is in your gates.29 20:11 For in six days Yahweh made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, and he rested on the seventh day; therefore Yahweh blessed the sabbath day and sanctified it.

20:12 Honor30 your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land31 which Yahweh your God is giving to you.

20:13 You will not kill.32

20:14 You will not commit adultery.33

20:15 You will not steal.34

20:16 You will not give35 false testimony36 against your neighbor.

20:17 You will not covet37 your neighbor’s house. You will not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his servant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that belongs to your neighbor.38

20:18 And all the people were seeing39 the thunderings and the lightning, and heard 40the sound of the horn, and the mountain smoking—and when41 they people saw it they trembled with fear42 and kept their distance.43 20:19 And they said to Moses, “You speak44 to us and we will listen, but do not let God speak with us lest we die.” 20:20 And Moses said to the people, “Do not fear, for God has come to prove you,45 that the fear of him46 may be before in order that you do not47 sin.” 20:21 The people kept48 their distance, but Moses drew near the thick darkness49 where God was.50

The Altar51

20:22 Yahweh said52 to Moses, “Thus you will say to the Israelites: ‘You yourselves have seen that I have spoken with you from heaven. 20:23 You will not make with me53 gods of silver, neither will you make for you gods of gold.54

20:24 An altar made of earth55 you will make for me, and you will sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings,56 your sheep and your cattle, in every place57 where I cause my name to be honored58 I will come to you and I will bless you. 20:25 And if you make me an altar of stone, you will not build it59 of hewn stone,60 for if you use your tool for it you will have defiled it.61 20:26 And you will not go up by steps to my altar, so that your nakedness be not exposed.’62
