3:1 Now Moses1 was tending the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.2 3:2 And the Angel of Yahweh3 appeared4 to him in5 a flame of fire from the midst of a bush.6 He looked7—and8 the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not being consumed.9 3:3 So Moses thought,10 “I will turn aside to see11 this amazing12 sight, why the bush does not burn up.”13 3:4 And when Yahweh14 saw that15 he had turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush, and said, “Moses, Moses!”16 And Moses17 said, “Here I am.” 3:5 And he said, “Do not come near.18 Take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy19 ground.”20 3:6 And he said, “I am the God of your father,21 the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Then Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look on22 God.

3:7 Then Yahweh said, “I have surely seen23 the affliction of my people who are in Egypt; and have heard their cry from before their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows.24 3:8 And I have come down25 to deliver them26 from the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey,27 to the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 3:9 And now, indeed,28 the cry29 of the Israelites has come up to me, and I have also seen the oppression30 with which the Egyptians oppress them. 3:10 So now, go, and I will send you31 to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.” 3:11 But Moses said32 to God,33 “Who am I, that I should go34 to Pharaoh, or that I should bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” 3:12 And God35 said, “Surely I will be with you;36 and this will be the sign37 to you that I have sent you: when you bring the people out of Egypt, you will serve38 God on this mountain.”

3:13 But Moses said39 to God, “If40 I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is his name?’41—what should I say42 to them?”

3:14 So God said to Moses, “I AM that I AM.”43 And he said, “Thus you will say to the Israelites, ‘I AM has sent me to you’.” 3:15 And furthermore, God said to Moses, “Thus you will say to the Israelites, ‘Yahweh,44 the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is my name45 forever, and this is my memorial from generation to generation.’46

3:16 Go and gather47 the elders of Israel, and say to them, ‘Yahweh, the God of your fathers, appeared48 to me—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—saying, I have surely visited49 you, and have visited50 that which has been done51 to you in Egypt. 3:17 And I promised52 that I would bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, to a land flowing with milk and honey.

3:18 And the elders53 will listen54 to you; and then you and the elders of Israel will go to the king of Egypt, and you will say to him, ‘Yahweh,55 the God of the Hebrews, has met56 with us. And now, let us go57 three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice58 to Yahweh our God.’ 3:19 But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go,59 no, not by a mighty hand.60 3:20 So I will stretch out my hand61 and strike Egypt with all my wonders62 which I will do in the midst of them; and after that he will let you go.

3:21 And I will give this people favor in the eyes of63 the Egyptians, and it will be that when64 you go out, you will not go out empty.65 3:22 But every66 woman will ask of her neighbor, and of her that happens to be staying67 in her house, gold vessels and silver vessels,68 and raiment. And you will put them on your sons and on your daughters—and you will plunder Egypt.69
