20:1 After the disturbance had ended, Paul sent for the disciples, and after encouraging1 them and saying farewell,2 he left to go to Macedonia.3 20:2 After he had gone through those regions4 and spoken many words of encouragement5 to the believers there,6 he came to Greece,7 20:3 where he stayed8 for three months. Because the Jews had made9 a plot10 against him as he was intending11 to sail12 for Syria, he decided13 to return through Macedonia.14 20:4 Paul15 was accompanied by Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea,16 Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica,17 Gaius18 from Derbe,19 and Timothy, as well as Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia.20 20:5 These had gone on ahead21 and were waiting for us in Troas.22 20:6 We23 sailed away from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread,24 and within five days25 we came to the others26 in Troas,27 where we stayed for seven days. 20:7 On the first day28 of the week, when we met29 to break bread, Paul began to speak30 to the people, and because he intended31 to leave the next day, he extended32 his message until midnight. 20:8 (Now there were many lamps33 in the upstairs room where we were meeting.)34 20:9 A young man named Eutychus, who was sitting in the window,35 was sinking36 into a deep sleep while Paul continued to speak37 for a long time. Fast asleep,38 he fell down from the third story and was picked up dead. 20:10 But Paul went down,39 threw himself40 on the young man,41 put his arms around him,42 and said, Do not be distressed, for he is still alive!43 20:11 Then Paul44 went back upstairs,45 and after he had broken bread and eaten, he talked with them46 a long time, until dawn. Then he left. 20:12 They took the boy home alive and were greatly47 comforted.
The Voyage to Mitylene20:13 We went on ahead48 to the ship and put out to sea49 for Assos,50 intending51 to take Paul aboard there, for he had arranged it this way.52 He53 himself was intending54 to go there by land.55 20:14 When he met us in Assos,56 we took him aboard57 and went to Mitylene.58 20:15 We set sail59 from there, and on the following day we arrived off Chios.60 The next day we approached61 Samos,62 and the day after that we arrived at Miletus.63 20:16 For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus so as not to spend time64 in Asia,65 for he was hurrying66 to arrive in Jerusalem, if possible,67 by the day of Pentecost. 20:17 From Miletus68 he sent a message69 to Ephesus, telling the elders of the church to come to him.70
20:18 When they arrived, he said to them, You yourselves know how I lived71 the whole time I was with you, from the first day I set foot72 in Asia,73 20:19 serving the Lord with all humility74 and with tears, and with the trials that happened to me because of the plots75 of the Jews. 20:20 You know that I did not hold back from proclaiming76 to you anything that would be helpful,77 and from teaching you publicly78 and from house to house, 20:21 testifying79 to both Jews and Greeks about repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus.80 20:22 And now,81 compelled82 by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem83 without knowing what will happen to me there,84 20:23 except85 that the Holy Spirit warns86 me in town after town87 that88 imprisonment89 and persecutions90 are waiting for me. 20:24 But I do not consider my life91 worth anything92 to myself, so that93 I may finish my task94 and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the good news95 of Gods grace.
20:25 And now96 I know that none97 of you among whom I went around proclaiming the kingdom98 will see me99 again. 20:26 Therefore I declare100 to you today that I am innocent101 of the blood of you all.102 20:27 For I did not hold back from103 announcing104 to you the whole purpose105 of God. 20:28 Watch out for106 yourselves and for all the flock of which107 the Holy Spirit has made you overseers,108 to shepherd the church of God that he obtained109 with the blood of his own Son.110 20:29 I know that after I am gone111 fierce wolves112 will come in among you, not sparing the flock. 20:30 Even from among your own group113 men114 will arise, teaching perversions of the truth115 to draw the disciples away after them. 20:31 Therefore be alert,116 remembering that night and day for three years I did not stop warning117 each one of you with tears. 20:32 And now I entrust118 you to God and to the message119 of his grace. This message120 is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 20:33 I have desired121 no ones silver or gold or clothing. 20:34 You yourselves know that these hands of mine122 provided for my needs and the needs of those who were with me. 20:35 By all these things,123 I have shown you that by working in this way we must help124 the weak,125 and remember the words of the Lord Jesus that he himself said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.126
20:36 When127 he had said these things, he knelt down128 with them all and prayed. 20:37 They all began to weep loudly,129 and hugged130 Paul and kissed him,131 20:38 especially saddened132 by what133 he had said, that they were not going to see him134 again. Then they accompanied135 him to the ship.
