Paul at Corinth

18:1 After this1 Paul2 departed from3 Athens and went to Corinth.4 18:2 He5 found6 there7 a Jew named Aquila,8 a native of Pontus,9 who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius10 had ordered all the Jews to depart from11 Rome. Paul approached12 them, 18:3 and because he worked at the same trade, he stayed with them and worked with them13 (for they were tentmakers14 by trade).15 18:4 He addressed16 both Jews and Greeks in the synagogue every Sabbath, attempting to persuade17 them.

18:5 Now when Silas and Timothy arrived18 from Macedonia,19 Paul became wholly absorbed with proclaiming20 the word, testifying21 to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ.22 18:6 When they opposed him23 and reviled him,24 he protested by shaking out his clothes25 and said to them, “Your blood26 be on your own heads! I am guiltless!27 From now on I will go to the Gentiles!” 18:7 Then Paul28 left29 the synagogue30 and went to the house of a person named Titius Justus, a Gentile who worshiped God,31 whose house was next door to the synagogue. 18:8 Crispus, the president of the synagogue,32 believed in the Lord together with his entire household, and many of the Corinthians who heard about it33 believed and were baptized. 18:9 The Lord said to Paul by a vision34 in the night,35 “Do not be afraid,36 but speak and do not be silent, 18:10 because I am with you, and no one will assault37 you to harm38 you, because I have many people in this city.” 18:11 So he stayed there39 a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.40

Paul Before the Proconsul Gallio

18:12 Now while Gallio41 was proconsul42 of Achaia,43 the Jews attacked Paul together44 and brought him before the judgment seat,45 18:13 saying, “This man is persuading46 people to worship God in a way contrary to47 the law.” 18:14 But just as Paul was about to speak,48 Gallio said to the Jews, “If it were a matter of some crime or serious piece of villainy,49 I would have been justified in accepting the complaint50 of you Jews;51 18:15 but since it concerns points of disagreement52 about words and names and your own law, settle53 it yourselves. I will not be54 a judge of these things.” 18:16 Then he had them forced away55 from the judgment seat.56 18:17 So they all seized Sosthenes, the president of the synagogue,57 and began to beat58 him in front of the judgment seat.59 Yet none of these things were of any concern60 to Gallio.

Paul Returns to Antioch in Syria

18:18 Paul, after staying61 many more days in Corinth, said farewell to62 the brothers and sailed away to Syria accompanied by63 Priscilla and Aquila. He64 had his hair cut off65 at Cenchrea66 because he had made a vow.67 18:19 When they reached Ephesus,68 Paul69 left Priscilla and Aquila70 behind there, but he himself went71 into the synagogue and addressed72 the Jews. 18:20 When they asked him to stay longer, he would not consent,73 18:21 but said farewell to74 them and added,75 “I will come back76 to you again if God wills.”77 Then78 he set sail from Ephesus, 18:22 and when he arrived79 at Caesarea,80 he went up and greeted81 the church at Jerusalem82 and then went down to Antioch.83 18:23 After he spent84 some time there, Paul left and went through the region of Galatia85 and Phrygia,86 strengthening all the disciples.

Apollos Begins His Ministry

18:24 Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, arrived in Ephesus. He was an eloquent speaker,87 well-versed88 in the scriptures. 18:25 He had been instructed in89 the way of the Lord, and with great enthusiasm90 he spoke and taught accurately the facts91 about Jesus, although he knew92 only the baptism of John. 18:26 He began to speak out fearlessly93 in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila94 heard him, they took him aside95 and explained the way of God to him more accurately. 18:27 When Apollos96 wanted to cross over to Achaia,97 the brothers encouraged98 him99 and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, he100 assisted greatly those who had believed by grace, 18:28 for he refuted the Jews vigorously101 in public debate,102 demonstrating from the scriptures that the Christ103 was Jesus.104

Paul Encounters Disciples of John the Baptist at Ephesus

19:1 While1 Apollos was in Corinth, Paul went through the inland2 regions3 and came to Ephesus. He4 found some disciples there5 19:2 and said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”6 They replied,7 “No, we have not even8 heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 19:3 So Paul9 said, “Into what then were you baptized?” “Into John’s baptism,” they replied.10 19:4 Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him,11 that is, in Jesus.” 19:5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, 19:6 and when Paul placed12 his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came13 on them, and they began to speak14 in tongues and to prophesy.15 19:7 (Now there were about twelve men in all.)16
