IBS 2.7 > Class Discussions Q. I cannot open an attachment that my classmate has posted in our class discussion forum. A. Your computer must have the correct application installed to open the attachment. For example: For pdf attachments, you must have Adobe Reader. You can download it for free from http://get.adobe.com/reader/ For word processing documents, you must have the application in which the document was created, and the application must be a compatible version. For example, to open a Microsoft Word file that is in a .docx format, you need Word 2007 or later. If you do not have Word 2007, but still need to open .docx files, you may want to download the Microsoft Compatibility Pack. This will allow you to open .docx files using older versions of Word. See http://en.kioskea.net/faq/317-how-to-read-a-docx-document for more information. Another alternative is to install Open Office, which is capable of opening .docx files. See http://www.openoffice.org/. Hint: If you are posting a Word document, and you have Word 2007 or later, consider saving it as a Word 97-2003 document (.doc format instead of .docx) before posting. This will ensure that your classmates who may have older versions of Word can open it without having to install additional software.
